I know it probably sucks compared to the pros around here, but it looks cool. From Chicago at 8:30CST.
I used ISO 400, 1/400 shutter speed at f16. Some of the guru's here recommended that and it really worked well.
The camera was a D3100 with a 55-300mmVR all the way out. No VR on a tripod with a remote. Soooooo cool.
Thanks to all my mentors.
1st moon,...untouched
Did you take more pics at other settings? I like the shot, but it's just a bit dark.

Great job, I'm so happy for you. I know that it's just one of those things we all want to do. Take our own moon shots.
I have tried and my set up was very simular to yours. 70-300mm lens without VR or IS ,no tripod etc. (Cheap old "tammy"). I was also given a very simular settings from Val. The only differences was she told me F9. Mine is a little brighter. Don't know if that's the difference, or if it was that I took my picture in November, but thought I would share that with you.
FIY I shot mine with a Canon 60D. I think that it's the basically the same as the Nikon D3100.

It is a tad dark.....as soon as I adjusted the exposure the shots really whited(blew) out. If you know what I mean. Only a 1/3 stop or two really made a difference. I'm getting ready to go out and grab a few more. Its getting cold here and don't want to condensate the lens. Get back to you soon. This isssssss coooool.
Now you have a good starting point, play with the exposures and WB and see what you can come up with!
(Leave your camera outside and just bring the card in to see what you got, no condensation to worry about that way.)

Awesome advice.....you "are" the man. I never thought of that. Coooooooooollll.
R U calling?
Don...No need for a bigger lens. That's the advantage of a sharp lens. It allows you to enlarge the photo in p/p without losing detail.
Nice decent moon shot. I suppose you've shot the moon before when it turned out less decent?

I'd rather shoot it without needing PP Sorry if that sounds arrogant. The software should be a backup, not the science.
Don...I don't consider cropping to be significant p/p.
