As the owner of a Sigma 18-250mm, I've been wondering why Sigma has come out with a 18-300mm and marked my model down. I was considering an upgrade even though there was only a 50mm difference but then I found out that apparently the new one in only for Nikon F. If this is true, my understanding is that it would not fit my D5200. Can anyone verify this? Thanks, Bob

the:
Sigma 18-300mm F/3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM 'C'
is intended for APC-S cameras and a nikon mount version is available for your D5200..

That's what I thought. It's B&H's description that's horsed up. Nikon F is the only choice given for Nikon. I went to Adorama and everything looked okay. Both companies are selling the same lens because they both have the same manufacturer's item code. But of course it on backorder anyway. :-(

It's probably me but isn't Nikon F a different type of camera to my Nikon D5200? Someone bragged recently about purchasing one and even included some pictures he took with it. If not it's my mistake not B&H. Let me know. Thanks, Bob

When they say Nikon F mount they are not talking about a specific camera. It is what the Nikon lens mount has been called seemingly forever.

nikon introduced the f mount back in 1959, your 5200 is just 1 of dozens of f mount cameras.

But it is important to know that your D5200 does not have a focusing motor in the camera...so many of the older lenses will not autofocus with it. They will work otherwise.

All new Nikon lenses have the focusing motor in the lens.

Perhaps you are thinking FX, which is the designation for the full frame sensor, rather than the F mount.

I had a Sigma 18-250 for over a year and loved it. I've had the new 18-300 Sigma now for about 4 months and it's a much better lens. That's why it's $600 and it compares favorable to the Nikon 18-300 for $1000. It's not just the extra 50mm. I sold my Nikon 55-300 after getting this lens, it's just as good at 300mm as the Nikon was and it's relatively light weight. A great walking around lens. My 18-250 got soft at around 220mm, the 18-300 is real sharp up to about 270mm. Like all zooms, it has "sweet spots". I also got the USB dock for fine tuning the focus, but it seems perfect from the factory. Good luck if you upgrade, if not, you still have a very capable all purpose lens.

You may be confusing a Nikon Df (type of DSLR camera) with F mount.

All Nikon cameras use F mount lenses.

The F series Nikons were 35mm film cameras.
I owned a Nikon F3 back then and it used F mount lenses - the same as my D60 & D300s uses today.

I have placed my order but it is showing as a backorder of a pre-book. Did you get yours from the first batch they shipped and now they are out? Anyway, I bit the bullet and placed my order. I love Sigma lenses and that's why I have two of their primes as well. Thanks, Bob

The Sigma 18-300mm model is part of Sigmas new "Global Vision series of lenses and is compatible with their USB Docking unit for user adjustability of the lens, a fantastic feature of Sigma lenses. The 18-300mm has been on the market since last fall and I have sold several of them to MANY very happy customers. Its likely the sharpest superzoom I have seem over the entire zoom range of the lens.
