Canon 5DS R

I heard in another string that the low pass filter could be turned on for the 5DS R.
Here is what Canon says:

"Dear Lawrence Lee Huber:

Thank you for contacting Canon product support. I understand that you are inquiring about the low-pass cancellation filter in the EOS 5DS R. I will be happy to address your inquiry.

The low-pass cancellation filter is a physical filter over the sensor and cannot be turned off and on. It is always active.

Please let us know if we can be of any further assistance with the EOS 5DS R. Thank you for choosing Canon.

Sincerely,

Rodney
Technical Support Representative"

This makes more sense to me.

That makes sense, but if it was a switchable thing why on earth would they go to the expense of producing and marketing two distinct models?

At this end of the market, we are not really talking about functionality being able to be added with an extra license key to turn on capabilities from a single software image, this is a hard wired capability. It is there, or it is not.

I got this information because on a different string it was said the bypass could be turned off and on on the R model which did not make sense so I wanted to make sure no fellow UHHer was misled.

I wasn't questioning your judgement on this, quite the opposite in fact.

I can't quite imagine why someone would think that the filter could be turned on or off unless they hadn't done their research or were just clueless.

I have heard it rumored that there are at least two completely clueless people in cyberspace and that they actually post things on the internet! Shocking! :)

There is a lot of confusion on this issue I think. I posted a link to an article that Adorama put out the other day addressing this topic so I don't think it's just to our forum. You can find it http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-291529-1.html

Wow! Looks like a review written by someone who hadn't really researched the tech or just didn't comprehend.

I know this stuff is complex - you should try wrapping your brain around quantum computing - but don't premier organizations like Adorama have a stake in trying to do a better job of communication than that? Mr.Google does a pretty good job, as does the Canon Rumors site....

Thanks for the clarification. Rumors can be terrible things. Why, I have even read of people claiming they can take pictures without film! Can you believe that stuff? Don't believe what you read on this internet thingy! I even read something by a guy who claimed that a voice in his car tells him where to go. Said it was some great electronic device. Fool! He obviously doesn't realize that he is married! :-D

Now wait a minute! You can turn a GPS off! Plus, it's usually my wife who tells the GPS to "Shut The F&*! Up."

I'll keep my wife any day when compared to a GPS! Not only is she right more frequently, but she's usually nice about it! And she will drive home half the time.

I might not be the norm here, but my wife is a great asset. And she's a photographer to boot!

Did your wife write this for you too?

It is my understanding that the low pass filter is a fundamental part of the hardware of a digital camera. They will make two models of the newest 5D; one has the low pass filter, the other doesn't. Choose one according to your needs or desires. If I remember correctly, the 5DS R is the one without the low pass filter. The low pass filter is no more "switchable" than the image sensor.

It appears it has a cancelling filter over the low pass filter. Perhaps someone can clarify.
