Well, my 2 cents worth. So long as there is a demand, business and personal, for graphics manipulation (including photo post processing)Apple, Dell, etc.,etc. will respond to that need. The major reason I have found for "upgrading" my desktops is the fact that Microsoft, Adobe, Corel, etc. "upgrade" their operating systems, programs, etc.

I can still get all the 20" to 30" or larger high resolution Sony, and other major brand monitors that I want.. It may be that the place you are shopping has quit carrying high performance desktop and / or high performance laptop computers, but they are readily available. I can even get them at Tiger Direct and other semi-discount places. If you can't find what you are looking for locally, you can always get them from Adorama. B&H and other professional camera outlets. Do not fear, Intel, AMD and others are still making high performance processors (although Apple no longer uses the Motorola chip and completed conversion of their entire model line to the Intel processor in 2006 ), Nvidia and other high end graphics processors are still available and constantly being improved. What we are seeing is that tablets are making a crossover between smart phones and the smaller laptops. Some tables are pretty capable for basic work but, unless it has some kind of a docking station that allows extra memory, hard drive and input/outputs, it can really only be used for quick and dirty editing of images.. I wouldn't want to have to edit a string of 150 shots on a tablet and have them ready for a customer. I would use the tablet (assuming the screen was large enough) to preview my days work to do the first cull of shots that didn't make the grade. I would then upload them back to the office to do full editing on my big computer and set them for printing or what ever... the desktop / full function laptop ( my Intel 5 laptop with a 1 TB drive and 8 gb of memory is barely capable of doing editing on the road and I have a 3 tb usb drive that I use for my storage to keep the laptop drive free of images). Even using a Wacom or other pad with the laptop is a challenge to the hardware. The Wacom is very smooth and responsive on my desktop. So never fear, we are many years from a smartphone or tablet replacing powerful laptops and desktops for editing. And the builders / suppliers know it.
I can still get all the 20" to 30" or la... (show quote)

With the introduction of the “Apple Watch” and other “wearable” devices, I don’t see anyone using these to edit their photographs. Large high-def monitors will be around for a long time. Nothing else like the Apple 30-inch Cinema Display!

This is a ridiculous assumption. The new iMacs have enough heavy lifting power to do 4K video editing or any reasonable size photo editing project, especially when connected to RAID arrays.

Macs in general are getting more and more popular, and will continue to evolve for years, probably decades. It is true that mobile devices (smartphones and tablets) are selling well, but that's because sometimes you just need a car, not a truck. Macs and PCs are trucks in that analogy.

There are few things you can do on a small platform that you can't do on a large one--but there are many things you can do on a large platform you simply can't on a hand held devise--just like spending more on a camera will increase the range that it can work effectively, so too does spending more on a computer and screen.

I saw a Lenovo all-in-one today at Best Buy with what seemed to be a 30" screen so they're not topping out at 13". All-in-one's are being pushed right now because of the touch screen abilities of Windows 8 and I'm sure Microsoft is behind that market flooding. The camera department also had a huge Apple Retina screen that may have been 25" or 27" fired up that was pretty awesome.

Besides, you can't run a networked office with 50 or 100 professional workstations using sickly Android tablets that run $2.99 apps - so desktops and large monitors aren't going anywhere. What you see in retail stores is what the store knows sells the fastest to the largest market share and they carry more of that to maximize the profit per square foot of floor space. I saw it today at Best Buy too. The whole department was full of laptops and tablets and there were about 10 desktops (all-in-one's included) over on one side. Yet you can go to any website like Dell or Lenovo or HP or whatever and they have dozens of models available for school kids who don't need high performance through power gamer machines that stand 3 feet tall and have CPU refrigeration units inside.

So, you think the 27" iMac is on the way out? Available with up to 32GB of memory; a 4 core i7 Intel processor (or an i5);a choice of 2 graphic cards, with up to 4GB of on card memory. Thunderbolt 2 and USB3 ports; a choice of SSD or HD with SSD built in; AND either 4K or 5k retina display. Oh yes, it'll run Windows too if you buy an OEM copy. And yes, you do store your photos, videos and back ups on external drives- no big deal.

I didn’t believe you so I looked it up on the Best Buy website. Sure enough, there is a Lenovo all-in-one with a 29” screen!

Well, my eye was apparently reasonably accurate if I guessed 30" and it was 29! I just know I'd never seen such a huge computer monitor in all my years - and it was looking very good.

I like Lenovo these days. I have one of their Yoga 10" tablets and the screen is one of the best I've seen, it has great sound, it's loaded and fast, and has an 18 hour run time battery. I charge it once and make sure to turn off the screen whenever I'm done and the battery lasts me for upwards of two weeks.

Don't follow the herd. It's for fools. PC,s, IMacs, and laptops are not going away. Use those tools, and ignor marketers. After 35 years, it,s easy to spot scams. You concern is unfounded.
