Maple Syrup Time

I have been helping my friends in their first time endeavor at making maple syrup. We are in the collection process here in Michigan and will cooking it down all weekend and beyond, we hope. Some of our trees require a long slog by foot to get to them everyday. Good exercise but exhausting for us ladies over 60.

Yummy! I see lots of trees tapped around here.

Interesting how things have changed. We had some Sugar Maples in the woods behind our house in MA and I tapped them a couple of times just for the heck of it and so the kids could see how the syrup was made--up close and personal. I've never seen the closed plastic bags before; we used small buckets, but the bags would surely keep the sap cleaner. Then we boiled the syrup on an old gas grill and one of the wife's turkey roasting pan. It's a lot of work for a small amount of syrup; I think the ratio is about 40:1 sap to syrup. Fun to do though.

Yes, the bags are working well but they lack the charm of old buckets. it is a lot of work but it's a fun group activity and more about the time together than about the product. If we manage to each get a quart we will be lucky.

Funny, the first thing I thought of when I saw this title was Michigan.... and I was right! LOL! I think the collecting is going on in my area, too (Gaylord).
