Greetings! New in St. Mary's, MD
Navy guy who is passionate about learning and growing as a photographer. I heard there are meetings at the Pax Air Museum... Can anyone confirm this?
Been there several times, but I don't recall if there's a photography store around there. If there is, you might inquire there. You might also ask the museum staff.
You are listed as "In Hiding" but I would guess you are somewhere near St. Mary's county, if not in the county.
Welcome to the Hog Justin.
Welcome to the Hog, Justin. You'll find lots of friends & plenty of good advice here. I was stationed at the test center from 67-70. Myself & 2 other Photographer's Mates were assigned to VP-30 but worked out of the base photo lab. Here's a link to their website:

Welcome to the family :)
I lived in the DC area for a number of years, enjoyed a visit or two to your pretty town.

Welcome to the force...
You have entered an addictive land of truths, myths, fantasies, ghosts, goblins and good old fashioned advice (whether you want it or not)...
I went through VP-30 in spring of '70 - beautiful base, nice beaches and the local colleges were great ;)

Welcome to UHH.
I was an AO in the Navy from 1966-1969, aboard USS Forrestal 1967-1969.
Wow.. I can already tell this is a very lively, welcoming bunch! Thank you ALL for the hospitality and every future response! I updated my profile - I live in Southern Maryland but am originally from S.F.,CA. I am at work at the moment, so I will have to post some picture later on.
***My current setup in a Canon 6D with a 50mm 1.2L.***
I am currently in training / preparation to shoot "professionally" for events and weddings (ofcourse for free at the moment.. so I am soaking in every opportunity).
My question to you all is what do you think is best for in terms of PRIME lenses (specifically for events / especially weddings)?
Since I am a big Canon-only fan the following wishlist is all Canon L's - critiques and experience stories are hugely welcome!!
Here's my wishlist in priority order: ALL CANON brands
600EX-RT Speedlite
24mm f/1.4L
135mm f/2L
35mm f/1.4L
14mm f/2.8L
100mm macro f/2.8L
14mm 2.8
My approach is a Prime / Fixed lens approach to foster the sharpest photos possible. The inability to zoom will cause me, the shooter, to get into the best possible vantage point (the 135mm telephoto as my long-range lens).
I love the candid-ness of photography and the emotions it captures. I am a big advocate of "wide" and "ultra-wide" lenses and would like to start a thread asking: "which lens is the best for each situation?"
Here is my thinking:
50mm - Best all-around. Street photography. Un-intrusive.
35mm - Indoor intimate photography.
24mm - Intimate photography to also capture landscape.
135mm - Long-range prime.
14mm - Capture location, landscape and architecture.
100mm macro - Close-ups for items, things.
So, what do you all think? Would you add anything to the list (with wedding / events in mind)?
Welcome aboard, add your location to your profile. It's fun to know where we all hail from. Hope you like your time here.
