Lens Difference

I picked up a D7100 kit with a 18-140 3.5-5.6 Nikon lens I have a lens that was off my D80 18-200 3.5-5.6 is there much different in these lens other than the range

I used the 18-200mm on my original D90 and then D7000, but it doesn't get great reviews. I suspect (and that's all it is) that the 18-140mm would be better.

Can't comment on the 18-140mm lens, I have no experience with it. I do have the 18-200mm VRII lens and like it a lot. It stays on my D7100 about 85% of the time. I find it to be sharp and gives more range than the 18-140mm.
Jerry, do you have the VRI or the VRII 18-200mm lens?

Before my move to a full frame Nikon, over five years I took thousands of images with my D90 and the 18-200 f3.5 VR I and was very pleased with the results. A little soft as you approached 200mm, but unless you are enlarging to BIG prints, I think you would be pleased with your results. And, the range gives you plenty of picture taking options.

There is no optical difference between the VR-I and VR-II 18-200, they just fixed something that caused the first lens to expand when pointed down. I have shot with both 18-200's and found both about the same. it's not the sharpest lens ever made but it can perform well in its sweet spot, and I certainly have loved the easy versatility it offered.
I would not regard the 18-140 optically better enough to warrant loosing the range. If we were talking 24-70 F2.8, then yes, it would be worth sacrificing range for image quality.

Agree with glgracephoto! The versatility balances the very minor sharpness issues. 35,000+ images viewed on a HDTV and no complaints. :thumbup:
