I have done a small boat cruise out of Juneau instead of the big boat cruise and found it to be fantastic. You cruise in and out of places the big boats can't go and get shots of amazing wildlife plus scenery that is beyond viewing from the big boats. I bit pricier but worth it. There are also tours to gardens, bog areas and the old tombstone cemetery in Skagway. For sure take the train ride at White Pass. Dress in layers as it goes cold to warm to cold quickly.

You really have to watch your exposures. When I went it is soooo clear and for instance the glaciers very white, etc That was print film. Now of course you can see what you have and correct. Also the light at night. I took photos at 1:00 AM. Wow YOU will enjoy each stop.

I agree wholeheartedly with this advice. We've done five cruises to this part of Alaska and really love it. We generally don't do much in Ketchikan other than go shopping.

The train in Skagway is expensive but really photogenic.

Whalewatching in Juneau (and Sitka) is rewarding. The various charter boat operators cooperate. If one spots some whales, he radios everyone else, and they all converge. You're more or less guaranteed to see a bunch of them. We've never seen them breach, just lots of blow-holes and tails.

One time we were leaving Juneau in early July late in the evening, and happened to notice a strange light in the sky. Turned out to be the Northern Lights. Spectacular, and very unusual at such a low latitute (or is it longitude?) Amazing that I got anything from the deck of the moving ship. Each shot was about 3 seconds, handheld.

You'll love your trip.
I agree wholeheartedly with this advice. We've don... (show quote)

Nice lights. When I went on a cruise through the Inside Passage in June I didn't see them. Looks like you took the Tracy Arm pic from the inside of a ship through the tinted windows...I did, too until it stopped sleeting/raining. I want on 2 whale watches...saw lots of humpbacks on the first one near Juneau(?) but NOTHING at all on the orca trip out of whatever Canadian port it was on the way back to Seattle :(

If I went on all the side trips I wanted to (my first experience in Alaska) I would have spent more than my cruise and airfare! Next time I go I want to go to Danali, among other places. I took a duck tour, 2 whale watching tours a photography tour with Tom Ganner (TGanner), a hog and a guide with Rainbow Glacier Tours in Hanes, AK. I might have gone on one more, but I forget.

Get it as close as possible in camera, then let the digital darkroom turn it into a work of Art.

Hi there,
New to the Hog. Been reading it for a while. Live in Juneau and would love to show you around when you get here. There are 2 trails on either side of the Mendelhall Glacier, East and West glacier trail. The East glacier trail is an easy 2 mile loop hike and the West glacier trail is a bit longer one way in and out. From The West glacier trail there is another trail that trails off down to the glacier where we should still have something left of the ice cave. It used to be a good 400 feet deep but has been cut in half over the last few years as it collapses a few feet every summer. Great shots can be had inside if you are a bit adventuresome. Whale watching is always a must here and many of the tours have a guarantee that if you do not get to see any whales its your money back. Some enjoy the helicopter tours that will whisk you up a glacier in 20 min. Plenty of wildlife is available on land whether you are interested in eagles, bears or other critters. Our Facebook group (Juneau Photo Group - jpg) is open to any members interested. Further trails are abound here as well. happy shooting.
