Our Northwoods friends will get the joke..

This is the third hole this size he has made in this tree - I'm surprised it's still standing.

Great picture! I am anxiously waiting for my pilate to come and work on my pine tree so I can shoot him (with my canon) He (or she, can't tell) comes around in Spring.

Does the tree have carpenter ants in it's heart? Could be an explanation. Or beetle grubs - look for finger-sized tunnels.
Otherwise, that's a typical feeding hole.

I have a feeling this Pileated Woodpecker would do a better job than a Jonsered, at least a lot better than the one I had. It wouldn't hit a lick. Took it back & now have an Echo. :D Great shot, especially in dl.

Obviously, something worth returning for, it's the third hole in the same tree.
