These falls are a popular tourist destination, particularly in the fall when the trees are at their peak color. I've been there many times in the fall, but this was my first time in the winter. We were brave enough to find an alternate path led led us down to the river, and we walked about 1/2 mile right up to the falls. It was spectacular! The copper-ish color, which is much more pronounced in summer and fall, is a result of the leaching of tannic acids from the cedar and hemlock swamps that feed the river.
People up on the viewing platform were asking my daughter and her boyfriend to smile and wave at them so they could take photos.
