This was another Life Bird for me...so needless to say I was really excited! A hawk of the North, the Rough-legged Hawk breeds in Arctic tundra and taiga regions around the northern hemisphere. Both dark and light forms are common, with many birds intermediate between the extremes. It's only here in the winter...and with the 0 degree weather...it must have felt right at home ;-)

My apologies. I never commented on your images. They're really great, especial when I compare them to mine. Love the wing spread from below.
I've lived in this area of NY for almost 9 years. In that time I've never seen, or noticed any kind of hawk. I posted some images of what I thought was a Coopers Hawk and someone identified it as a rough legged hawk.
Well, there seems to be numerous R L Hawks around here now, in winter.
In the summer, we get the ospreys.
Wish I could find some Eagles.
Gorgeous, Jan. Congrats!
I got to see a few last winter, on the ground at great distance, on a telephone pole at great distance :)

Good for you getting a Rough-legged Hawk...I guess they migrate here in the northern states in the winter...but I lived in NC and never saw one till I moved to PA. I love Ospreys...but we only get them in Spring and Fall migration...we've got lots of Eagles though :-D

Thanks Linda...I never saw any in NC...so I was really excited! I'm really pleased you liked them!
The bird, the lens, the camera and YOU joined forces and captured an excellent set! I only wish that I could see them in DOWNLOAD mode!

Thanks Bob...not even close to my usual settings though ;-) I'm trying a lot of experimentation with this camera.
If you only get one chance to shoot these beautiful birds in your lifetime, I think you can rest easy, for you did the job perfectly. Great work as always.
A stunning set Jan.Nice one.
