What's a filtered lens?

Do you actually mean "a filter"?

If you do, then the answer is: for various reasons, sometimes to block the amount of light, sometimes to change the color of the scene, sometimes to help a sky look better.

Filters are one way to change the resultant effect that the lens has upon the sensor, or the film as the case may be.

And the most basic reason is --- when you inevitably smash the front of your camera into something, do you want to break your $10 filter or your $500 lens?

I have UV filters on all my lenses just for protection. Maybe there is some loss of image, maybe not. But the surface of the glass is not exposed to ...whatever.

I am with you on that, I always have a UV filter on all my lenses. Next the circ polarizer for my second choice, if needed.

how is it that smashing one's lens is inevitable?

Maybe just finger smudges, or some random scratches.

Different filters will create different results. I am of the schools that believes in keeping a filter on to protect the lens and I have UV filters for all my lenses. Having said that, IMHO a CP filter is important filter to have. I won't go into the reasons here because they can easily be found on line.
