An interview with roxiemarty,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
As long as I've been an adult. My father was a very good amateur photographer, and I aspired to be as good as he was. I inherited his twin lens camera; it still takes great pictures.

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
I am self taught, but had very good mentors when I worked for a youth sports company in my area. They had great confidence in me, and taught me to use a light meter and studio lights. I also did one year of school photography, when they were still on large format film cameras! But that's another story. I do occasional weddings, childrens' portraits, engagements, but mostly I do alot of nature and landscapes.

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
A clear subject matter, great light, and something that touches the viewer.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
I use a 50D most of the time and my external flash 90% of the time. The white balance is changed according to ambient light. Same with ISO. I use the lowest ISO possible for the shot. On this shot, I let everything else be in auto mode due to the solemn nature of the National Cemetery. It was the Changing of the Guard, very emotional!

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
As soon as I get home, I download my cards into my desktop. When I'm ready to work on them, I go through every image, cropping or adjusting as I go. I use photoshop CS6, only adjusting levels, curves, and contrast or saturation as needed. I delete any at that time I am unhappy with.

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
My father of course, and I've always had a love of the arts. I already had a vision of the image in my mind before we got there, but it was much more emotional at the Tomb. Very moving, I hope my image portrays that feeling.

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
I would have gone to photography school, so I would feel more confident in my abilities.

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
Better lighting techniques.

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
My speedlight and circular polarizer.

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
Right now, my go to lens is a Tamron 28 to 75 2.8. It is very versatile, a great all around lens.

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
It depends on the type of shoot, but for portraits outside, I would take 2 speedlights with Westcott stands and softboxes, Phottix Odin slaves, a reflector, and a friend,(assistant.) For my own nature shots, both speedlights just in case, the slaves, clamps, with hotshoe attachment on one.

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
I don't have an answer for that.

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
School photography sure was an experience!! They should make a sit-com about that one!

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
On the EyeEm app, under RoxieGonzalez.

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
Never give up on your vision, your dreams. Never stop learning your art!

An interview with manofhg,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I've enjoyed it from when I was little, but have only been working seriously at it for the past 8-10 years.

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
No formal training. Trial and error with an emphasis on error. Color landscape.

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
Capturing what you see and feel when you experience the scene.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
I use a Canon T2i and was using a 55-250mm zoom for this shot. This being a funeral of a relative, I just showed up, no scouting the area previous to the shot. The main difficulty I had was shooting with bright sunlight and shade in the same frame. No flash or other lighting was there.

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
I use Lightroom and occasionally, Elements. There was very little PP on this particular image though I can see some things now that I would have fixed if I had noticed them before submitting, (see right edge of flag in her lap).

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
I like trying to capture candids like this, but have little opportunity.

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
Not sure. If the sun were not so bright that day, that would have helped.

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
Wish that there had been digital a long time ago. That would have saved me a lot of money.

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
I carry very little other than kit lens and kit zoom. I do like my wireless remote shutter release which I carry for night exposures primarily and my polarizer.

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
Not sure. I mainly use my kit 18-55, it would be nice to have a faster lens for night shots.

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
I own a Canon Speedlite, 430EXi, and an umbrella but don't generally take it to shoots. I use it more at home for portrait and special set ups.

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
I do a lot of landscape while backpacking. If I couldn't photograph them, I would still like to just visit the same area for the pictures I save in my mind.

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
Shooting a couple of hours when the roll of film wasn't engaged in the take up spool. They were some excellent shots, but we'll never know how good.

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
I have them on Facebook and Flickr.

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
Spend more time trying to take one good shot than quickly taking a lot of shots thinking that one will be good.
