During a recent vacation my Canon 7D gave me an error message while using this lense and wouldn't work at all. The message suggested that the lense contacts needed cleaning. I have read a few message boards that Canon has had many problems with this lense. It seems that it goes bad after the warranty period and Canon does not seem to want to recognize the problem. Have any other users experienced this problem with this lense and if so, what did you do to rectify the problem. at $900 this is not a cheap lense and I think it should have performed better or Canon should have fixed it for no charge.

How old is the lens and by the way there is no "E" at the end of the word lens. Have you been using it in a somewhat dirty or dusty environment and how often have you removed the lens from the camera body? You may just have dirty contacts and using a clean pencil eraser you might be able to rub these contacts clean on the lens and the camera and it may well work again, if it was in fact the contacts causing the problem.

If damage has occured due to poor handling during attaching the lens or an electronic failure somewhere along the line, either in the lens itself or the camera body, then it will need to go for servicing. Do you have a problem with other lenses? Do you have a friend with a Canon maybe so you can try that lens on his Camera body? That way you can determine if it is the lens or the camera body.

Thank you for the response. Have tried all of the above. This lens has proven defective for many other users. It is not dust. It is caused by the premature wearing out of a 15 dollar part but to replace the part requires for the entire lens to be taken apart. I have seen message boards with lots of complaints about this lens.

Usually it's the power diaphram that goes bad. I've replaced hundreds of them. These are a common problem with all Canon lenses.

I'd suggest sending your lens to Rcik to see what it may cost to repair.

By the way Rick, I owe you some postage money.
