I agree with all except using the default date LR convention. if your are one to organize you mind around dates fine. if 1/2/14 tells you these are the photos of the XYZ zoo trip, no problem. If not the dates are of little value and you need to use a pile of keywords and searchs to find pics. In essence, the left LR pane becomes of little to no visual use. If those directory names use words and dates they become visually useable.

There are many youtube videos that discuss taking the time to construct a directory/naming convention that makes sense to the user doing the work. And most steered you away from the dates.

Trivial ex:
2014
.> a zoo 1-2-14
.> Jones Shot 1-5-14
.> Maine Vacation 1-12-14
.
.
.
2015
.> a zoo 1-5-15
.< smith wedding 2-12-15

Which looks more readable in the left pane than a series of dates? If the years are top directories you can expand and collapse at will. Use keywords but mostly to dial into locating more specific pictures - zoo/elephant/water.

Don't mean to harp but more time you put into defining your library structure, the easier it will be work the tool.

While I agree with your premise that having folders more meaningful, I am talking about the first mass clean up (if he has the mess I did, you will want to shoot your head off trying to do the organizing on the target at the same time you are trying to just "collect".) I found that it was easier to get it into LR, use the various viewing options and rearrange afterwards. Also you will be comfortable knowing you have "everything" in once place before you start organizing or cleaning up/deleting the "source" areas the files came from. You can certainly go through the trouble of setting new folders to import from every single time you import, but it is almost easier to keep your default and simply right-click rename when you have decided.

I shoot so much that there is no one folder that characterizes what I have....if I shoot several types of events in one day, I do my compartmentalizing after import.

Also, Julianne Kost is awesome; I have learned so much from her easy style of free videos. If you have two monitors, play on one and copy her actions on the other:-)

You can go into the Library module, go into folders on the left side, right click on each folder you want to remove from LR. This removes the folder from LR but not from your hard drive. The above advice to then organize your photos into folders should be followed. Then while still in the Library module import the folders that you want in LR. Hope this helps. You don't need to import all your photos into LR as the first prompt when you first open LR wants you to. Of course if you remove a folder from LR then you do lose all the changes you made in LR unless you have saved the files as jpeg, etc. :-(

It was my impression he had a problem because of his Picasa and iPhoto situation; often this is a gigantic ball of crap which has to be dissected later. If all folders are already neatly arranged with the right files in them, and they don't need to move from where they sit currently, then importing to "add to catalog" in place makes sense. But if he is trying to organize his library "on his new drive" and trying to uncouple the picasa mess, you may be better off doing it the "capture all, sort later" method. Just having gone through it a few times....

.... In my quest, I came upon a book titled "Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Classroom in a Book". It takes a few days, but reading the book front to back gave me the insight into how Lightroom works its magic and gave me the groundwork for establishing my workflow. It also serves as a great point of reference when I want to do something a bit different.

I highly recommend the book.

Agree. It doesn't have everything you need, but it is a good first reference. I'd suggest you take it to Staples or some other office supply store and get them to spiral bind it for you. Makes it much easier to use and only cost $5 or so.

Isn't this a regular book? I just purchased a copy on Amazon. The only difference in the title was "Lightroom 5". Did I waste my money ($41.+) when I could have just gotten a pdf?
