I have a new Canon 70D and several Nikon F mount manual lenses that were used with my old Nikon F3. I see that there are several adapters that may be suitable. All are priced about $40. I know that everything will be manual. Is there anything else that I should watch out for?Any preferences.

1) Neewer® Lens Mount Adapter for AF Confirm Nikon AI Lens to Canon EOS DSLR

2) Fotodiox NK-EOS-P Lens Mount Adapter, Nikon Lens to Canon EOS Camera Body, for Canon EOS 70D

3) Redrock Micro 2-063-0001 Micro Nikon to Canon EF Lens Mount Adapter

4) Bower ABEOSN Lens Adapter

5) Vello LA-CEF-NAF Lens Mount Adapter - Nikon F Lens to Canon EOS Camera

6) Cinevate CNADNA000021 Nikon F to Canon EOS Adapter

The ones on ebay out of China should work just as well and they only cost about $10. If you are going to buy one for each lens you might look for a US vendor selling those Chinese adapters, even those that you are considering are probably made in the same factories. I have cheap adapters that I use for M42, Pentax PK, and Olympus for my Canon EOS and they all work fine, had a Nikon but it got stuck on a lens and I broke it getting it off. I really like the ones that have focus confirm, it is helpful.

Be aware that with these adapters you will lose the ability to focus to infinity. I have a Canon adapter on a Nikon 50 mm lens from the 70's.

That should not be the case. The Nikons have a greater flange registration distance than do the Canon EOS cameras, the adapters only serve to properly space the lens mount at the proper flange distance for the Canon and of course provide the EOS mounting capability. If your lens will not infinity focus, maybe you should try a different adapter or see about having the focus recalibrated on your lens.

If this were true, it would be the exception rather than a rule .....

Since these lenses were originally 100% manual, including focus, I didn't expect any focusing aid from the camera. However, it's plausible that the camera's auto focus can detect proper focus, and indicate that through the viewfinder. Is this what you meant by "focus confirmation"

Does the adapter specs tell me if this is the case?

Thanks,
Gary

I have several old manual lenses that I still use, some from the 1950's, the autofocus confirm is simply a chip on the adapter that allows the camera to confirm focus. It works and it is a very useful aid, maybe not 100% but with the new focus screens manually focusing a lens takes some getting used to and the camera's chirp and lighting of the focusing points is a big help.

There are a number of chips available that provide basic connectivity and info with EOS cameras including focus confirmation. Some adapters come with those, and the description / pictures should make that clear.

Some chips such as Dandelion can be programmed to give specific lens details in Exif data.

Fotodiox has multiple variants that can be found on Amazon, along with other alternatives.

I have the basic Fotodiox Nikon-EOS adapter and it works quite well with most of my Nikon lenses and my Canon 20D. However, most, if not all, adapters will not work with "G" Nikon lenses as they do not have an aperture ring so there is no way to open up the aperture from the minimum aperture size (which is not an issue for OP using his MF Nikon lenses, but may be a factor for others following this thread who attempt to use AF-S Nikon lenses).

I also have an inexpensive Chinese "AF confirm" M42-EOS adapter for my Canon. What the AF confirm does is "beep" the focus confirm "chirp" and flash the focus points in the viewfinder when it senses a manual focus lens is properly focused.

Use of an "AF confirm" Nikon-EOS adapter may or may not be an advantage to OP depending on how well he feels he can manually focus with his body & focus screen. I do not use an "AF confirm" adapter on my Nikon bodies as the "electronic rangefinder" feature on my Nikons confirms focus for me when using manual focus lenses. I don't know if OP's body has a comparable feature or not; if it does then an "AF confirm" adapter would be redundant.

Thanks to all responders. I didn't even know that focus confirm existed until I received your post.

I called Fotodiox and they suggested

"Fotodiox Lens Mount Adapter with Dandelion AF Focus Confirmation Chip, Nikon Lens to Canon EOS Camera, for Canon EOS 1D, 1DS, Mark II, III, IV, 1DX, 1DC, 5D, 5D Mark II, II 7D, 30D, 40D, 50D, 60D, 70D, Digital Rebel T3i, T4i, T5i, SL1, and C300, C500"

and gave me the Amazon part number B003Y38GSS. I have one on order for $30.

I don't know if my 70D has something that makes this unnecessary or not. The adapter without the chip is $15, so it's not a big deal.

Again, thanks to all.

Look for a US vendor and get one of the Chinese adapters with the chip, it will not cost any more than the fotodox, EOS mounts are EOS mounts, it does not matter which camera you are shooting, those adapters fit both APS-C and FF cameras, I can't tell you how helpful the focus confirm is, I have it on all my adapters and it greatly improves my keeper rate.

Much as I admire the sometimes astute contributions of Sharpie, putting a Canon FL/FD lens onto a modern Canon EOS body can be much more of a Frankensteinian effort than using many other brand lenses, a discussion that "Blurry" and I have debated over time, and to which I hope we are both now reconciled. The FD to EOS thing can be done, but is fraught with problems, not for the faint of heart, and only worth it it in a few well researched situations. It can be done, but caveat emptor.

As for Nikon on a Canon? Why not if it works? Could be a Tiger head on a Moggy or a Pitbull on a kitten.

I suspect that there may be a few people out there on the Hog that might consider putting a Nikon lens on a Canon body is like putting a cat's head on a dog.

Please address you responses to Sharpie! :-D

Adapting Nikon lenses to Canon bodies is done everyday - I have the adapter and do it. It especially makes sense for a lens like the 14-24 .....if you can properly focus it !
