I am interested in purchasing Nikon's 28-70 f2.8 lens and was wondering if any hog members have this lens and what is their findings with regards to sharpness, etc.?
I would like to purchase the 24-70, but right now, a little out of my budget.
Any input would be most appreciated. If you have one you would like to part with, please pm me.

Thanks!

I had this lens a couple of years back before changing to the 24-70.

It's a very sharp lens, however; very big and very heavy!

You really need it on a pro body (full frame) or the balance between lens and body can be awkward.

An extremely sharp and very well regarded Nikon Pro lens. A bargain at the prices you find it selling for today when you can locate a good copy. Many of these have been beat to death by sports pros and photojournalists for years.

B&H Photo has this lens on sale for $1686.95 new and in stock. You can also check their trade-ins which are rated according to wear.

That is for a 24-70mm f2.8. The OP is referencing the 28-70mm f2.8, an entirely different lens.

I got one recently from ebay. Very nice lens, and much less expensive than the 24-70mm.

It would be hooked to my D3! Thanks for the input.

Thanks MT; not many out there right now in super great shape. And when you do find one, it's gone quickly.

Thanks Jerry; looked on ebay and found a few, but when they get into a bidding war, the price gets up there quickly. If I can't find one under or at 1k, I will opt for the 24-70.

Yes they are in high demand. The ones I have had sold between $850 and $950

Correction: That's a 35-70mm I got for $292.00. No bidding; "Buy it Now."

How does the Tokina AT-X Pro 28-70 f/2.6-2.8 compare to the Nikkor?

Very well actually, just much slower focusing. That was one of my two favorite lenses in the 1990s

Unless you really need the F2.8 faster lens, you might want to take a look at Nikon's 24-85 AF-S F3.5-4.5 VR. I have one and have found it to be really sharp, and, VR helps a lot at lower shutter speeds. It's a bargain at around $500 new!
