I'm goin on a fishing excursion in very southern Yukatan Mexico. The main object is fishin ,BUT. This is going to be a really cool trip. We are taking off from my buddy's house with 26 foot panga and going out to a deserted conk fishing island and camping. Lots of birds, salt water crocks, old buildings and great fishing. Then we are going to the mainland and cruising around the Sian Kaan biosphere and camping also.So I'm taking lots of fishing gear ,but I need to take a couple of cameras also. 1 will be my OLY TG2 . And then the ??s I have a 60d w/ efs 18-200 a Panasonic Fz200, a 6d, a7dmkii and lots of lenses. I do have a waterproof pelican box. I also will be traveling through very non tourista Mex by myself,so being ripped off is reality. My thoughts are to go as light as possible ,but, this trip is going to have some great photo ops. Thanx for any replies!!!!!

I am not qualified to say what equipment you will need as that is something you are probably better to determine based on what you like to shoot. My only suggestion is if you take any equipment, get insurance. Pretty cheap and worth the peace of mind. Enjoy the trip. It sounds great.

Good luck on your trip as it sounds like quite the adventure. I am always baffled by folks who write in and say I am going on a cruise, road trip, or whatever to wherever and ask what lenses should I take. I think most people can figure it out by themselves.

What kind of photos do you like to take? Do you do macro, do you do landscape, do you do wildlife? Whatever photography you do right at home will probably the same type of photography you will do in any other part of the world you might visit.

If you do landscape and maybe street photography then you might want a 16-35 type lens and maybe an 85mm lens, maybe a 55-105 lens. If you do wildlife you might take a 70-300 lens or a prime 300mm f4.

Sorry if I seem rude. I don't mean to but it is pretty simple to me. The landscapes probably won't be any farther away in China than they are right here in America. If you think you will run into African lions or alligators then I would be for a 70-300 lens.

My camera equipment is listed on my homeowner's policy. For me the cost is 1% of the value. Give your agent a call.

Thank You for replying. Not rude at all. My biggest quandary is size vs quality. And you are correct,I really sort of have my mind made up to take a couple of cheaper, smaller cameras instead of the bigger, more expensive dslrs. I took the Panasonic to Africa and it took great pics as long as you don't blow them up. I guess a lot depends on how I pack and feel about losing or ruining (salt water) my gear Thanx Again

I would take the FZ200. It gives you a lot of reach which you will need for wildlife, it's smaller than the DSLR, and it's the least expensive to replace.

In addition to all the wildlife there are also a number of large Mayan ruins near where you are going. Some of them are spectacular.

The little camera's you have will work ok for that, but are questionable for the wildlife.

When we went to the Yucatan I took a 34-70 2.8 and a 70-200 2.8 as well as a 12-24. I used all three lenses a lot, but struggled with the wildlife.

When we went back a second time I added my sigma `150-500. It made a huge difference.

If you exercise care, being robbed is unlikely. I never felt endangered, and was always treated with courtesy even when I was the only non Mexican in the area and no one spoke English. I don't speak Spanish, so there were some communication problems, but people didn't even try to take advantage of me when making change in grocery stores or whatever.

Great place and really kind courteous people. Hope you really enjoy the trip.

State Farm offers a Personal Articles policy. This is a replacement policy with no deductible and covers you for accidental direct physical loss or damage anywhere in the world. Usual exclusions for governmental confiscations and war. I don't believe it covers commercial use but I don't have a copy of the policy to hand. Cost is $14 / $1,000 of equipment insured. Since this is a replacement policy you do not get the cost of your equipment depreciated by a bean counter somewhere.
If you go online you can probably download a copy.

I was there, the Yucatan, in the early 80's. I wish I would of had a quality camera with me. I don't know the state of safety there now. I had no problems except with a couple of federalies.

I would take the camera you are most comfortable shooting with.

A couple of lenses will be enough.

You most likely will have no problems so enjoy yourself and let us see some pics.
