I use Lightroom, and have most photos corrected and stored on my laptop (PC) there.
This laptop is beginning to give me issues, not easy to upload pix, cannot transfer to CD anymore, etc...
I am going to buy a new laptop soon and wonder if anyone can suggest a good type to use just for my photos. PC vs. Mac? Thanks!

The mac army will be here soon.
If getting PC, get a gaming laptop like Alienware(Dell) or MSI for top performance and speed. Add some external hard drives for backup and storage. They are not cheap 1-2K for a decent one. But they will not give you time to get a cup of coffee when doing something major to a large photo file. (I remember those days with my old 486 Dell.) It will add a bit to the price but get one with a solid state drive for programs/workspace and an HDD for data storage. It will process faster.

Besides, you can then become a gamer and never have to leave the basement or wear anything except PJs and fuzzy bunny slippers.

Thank you!
Do you prefer a Mac over the suggested items, or will either suffice? I hate replacing laptops ever few years, and do not run on my PC as I like the ease of having the laptop wherever I feel like working
thanks again!

Thank you. I have about made up my mind to stay with PC in spite of the Mac Attack.

First thing to do is get a 1 - 3 TB external HD & transfer what pics etc you can before yr current laptop crashes & you can't transfer anything.

Min spec for a laptop I would suggest a high spec AMD (better than Intel but that's purely my choice) processor laptop with a min of 6 -8Gb (or more) RAM with an internal HD of no less than 1 - 2 or 3TB if you can afford it.

Laptop monitor size well that's yr decision mine for example is 17".

Hope that helps.

Baz

+1

The second thing to do is use this site's search feature to review the multiple lengthy conversations on this topic. I'm really starting to love the search button.

I am a PC person, I am sure a Macaholic will chime in soon.
One advantage of these pricey gamer laptops is it can also replace your desktop. Just plug in a good large monitor, full size/feature keyboard, your scanner, printer etc. and work. Then unplug and go mobile with the laptop. You may even (at least with Dell) be able to get a 'docking station" for the laptop you pick and then the change over from desk to mobile is even easier.

I got a message from Photoshop this week on my just-for-photos 2011 Mac laptop that some newer functions having to do with 3D (and something else I don't recall) won't work right with less than 512M of vRAM, so even if your Lightroom does not care today -- I don't know -- be sure your new computer can handle that specification. Here is why: in the future, 3D info will probably be used more widely to inform and algoritmically automate edits of traditional 2D images -- new intelligence.

You ask, PC or Mac? I use Photoshop+Bridge and Lightroom on each, as the CC license allows. A PC in the home office and a Mac laptop in the home studio.

This may interest you. Apple is aligning their photography apps across iPads, iPhones, and Mac computers and so is about to release Photos for OS-X which Apple also calls Photos for Mac; see http://www.apple.com/osx/photos-preview/. Deprecation is in the air for Aperture and maybe (desktop) iPhotos.

Whatever else Apple's move may offer Adobe customers, and you the poster with your Lightroom and copying to CDs, Photos for OS-X is another off-site backup destination and likely with mature privacy.
There is a nice image at this URL of an iPad, an iPhone, and a Macbook Air (rule of thirds, anybody??) showing the same photo collection (JPEGs?) on each device, synchronized as drawn from the cloud.

Hi from my reviews look at Apple Mac Pro with high retina , the pictures are outstanding, in addition you can also purchase their aperture software which is close to lightroom for half the price.however this computer starting price is $1299. Good luck

You can't go wrong with a Mac, except for having to learn how to use it - no big deal.

Get a couple of external hard drives and use them to back up each other. Western Digital has one that contains a redundant drive so that if one fails the other one still works.
