pic. contest
if a picture is worth a 1000 words why do you need a title for the pic. contest. why not let the photo talk to you.
an excellent question. additionally a question that makes sense. I offer this as an answer. naming your photograph allows the viewer to see the photographer's viewpoint for the image.
with a name, you need not struggle to figure out what the photographer had in mind.
the naming process allows an interaction between both parties. for example, as the viewer, do you agree or disagree with the title?
The need probably varies with each contest, but I suspect some viewers enjoy a context for something that may be unfamiliar to them. I certainly do.
Some people view a lot of photography as "telling a story." That is my guiding principle, but I salute those that are interested more in the technical aspects.
To each his own. :-)

For the Statue of Liberty a title may not be necessary I would think but if I posted a picture of a statue of Lapu-Lapu who is a Philippines hero it just might prove useful huh.
Now try and ask sensible questions in future, their's a good chap!!!

So if the title of a photo was say, 1003 words, would that make more sense?
A picture's worth a 1000 words? Prove it!!
