I will be in Toronto in a few weeks time and was thinking of buying a camera from Henrys as their prices seem to be quite good.
I know the prices are higher in Canada than in the US but they are lower than in the UK.
Are there any Canadian members who can advise me about Henrys and other camera retailers in Toronto.
Thanks.

Although I'm not Canadian, I have bought from Henry's with no problems. I placed the order, and the items were shipped to New York.

John you may find that with proof that you are returning home you might not have to pay tax either. Don't know if you will be covered for warranty though.

Thanks for that, I never thought about the tax, the warranty is something else to consider.

Henery's is very good For me living in Canada I find buying in Canada cheaper than the US Shipping from the states is rediculus as it cost more to ship some items than the cost of the item I buy a lot of aux stuff from China same stuff as sold in Canada or the US with free shipping Just need to wait a little longer. If you pay a little and they air freight it the suff comes faster than ordering from the US. Cameras I like to buy local just for the support if needed Check with the manufacture if they warranty a camera bought by you in Canada first. a simple e-mail to them and they will get back to you with a yes or no.

I have purchased several times via Ebay. Henry's is great, most of their items have a "best offer" option and they have been very generous in their discount from an already fair listed price.

Check out Henry's outlet in Mississauga...great deals there. But, beware our dollar is crap here right now, so may cost more than you think. Also check out Downtown Camera in Toronto, right down from Henrys downtown...they are a lot cheaper!

Thanks for your advice.
Re your other post about Chrome I am having similar things happening to me.
You Tube videos won't play properly and several other annoying problems. I have reinstalled and done a system restore but to no avail. I am beginning to think it has something to do with the add ons I have because when you reinstall the add ons are also reinstalled. At this point in time I have removed Chrome and use Internet Explorer instead a which is in some ways much better.
If you don't like Bing you can have a Google tab put in your favorites.

We have two retailers in Toronto who specialize in photography gear catering to consumers and professionals. These are Henry's - http://www.henrys.com/# - and the other is Vistek - https://www.vistek.ca/.

Both retailers are excellent. They carry a diverse range of gear including video too in addition to everything else you'd expect in a photo shop from consumer goods to professional ones.

Personally I have bought from Henry's from time to time and it's always been a happy experience. However my favoured vendor for all my own gear is Vistek. I've been their customer for over ten years.

Price wise the two tend to be similar and while negotiating a price is not something Henry's likes to do, Vistek often will consider it. If you go to Henry's go to their downtown store, that's where the experts tend to reside and odds are that you can go home with whatever it is you want. The outlying Henry's stores often don't stock the high end stuff so you have to wait a few days before they can get it for you.

The Vistek store in Toronto happens to also be downtown a short street car ride east of Henry's, and that store has all the experts and the high end gear too. From either you'll get good advice as a rule.

There are two other retailers here that I have sometimes used ...

Aden Camera, on Yonge Street north of Dundas - http://www.adencamera.com/default.asp - which is geared more to the amateur but popular among many and there is Downtown Camera - http://downtowncamera.com/ - which happens to be a block west from the downtown Henry's store. Downtown Camera specializes in professional stuff though they do have some consumer items too. I like them but as I got more sophisticated I found it harder to get the esoteric gear I needed.

If you're interested in a contact at Vistek send me a PM and I'll send you a name for Vistek where you'll get a good deal. As to the others, I don't have a specific contact. At Henry's for instance I always get someone else so it's been impossible to form a relationship.

Hi Bugfan,
Thanks very much for your very detailed reply to my post. I will only have a few hours as I am flying out next morning. I will try to visit Henrys and Vistek time permitting otherwise I will have to order online and arrange to have the item delivered to the airport hotel.
I know what I want so that makes thing easier as far as choice is concerned,
Thanks,
John.

You're most welcome.

Since you are limited time wise, Going east from Yonge Street on Queen Street a block and a half - Downtown Camera is the first store you'll find on the south side. A block later you'll come to Henry's also on the south side. Then going to Vistek you can walk it in about twenty minutes or take a short street car ride. Vistek is on the north side of Queen. So in one short trip you can do those three with no problem.

Hmm, I wonder what we might do to convince you to stay a bit longer? If our camera stores don't do it, how about our ladies instead or maybe our lovely dining facilities or perhaps our many theatres? There's also concert halls and museums and art galleries too. And we have many shopping opportunities too. Sure you don't want to stay a while?

Anyway, have a super trip.

Thanks that sounds very tempting, actually we are on our way to Costa Rica to catch a cruise ship back to Europe via the Panama Canal and lots more.
We are arriving in Toronto at 2pm and by the time we have gone through the airport and arrived at the hotel it's going to be around 4pm, so in reality we have only got from that time.
So as I know what I want I may have to order on line and arrange for delivery to the hotel.
Once againg,
Thanks.

You may well be right. From an Airport hotel you are about an hour from downtown particularly around 4 PM on a week day which is the beginning of our rush hour. Rush hour extends to about seven in the evening so there's no relief by waiting longer.

Ordering online is probably a good idea under the circumstances. Make sure that the hotel is prepared to accept a parcel before you check in and insist that the retailer delivers the order before you arrive too. That way if it's not there when you check in you still have time to follow up and get it delivered before you leave in the morning.

Cruise eh? You could come back early and cruise our great lakes and the St Lawrence Seaway in between exploring Toronto. That'll take you to our honeymoon capital too - Niagara Falls - and who knows, maybe something magic might happen there that's better than the cruise was. It would be a chance to really try out all that lovely gear you just bought too. Tee Hee!
