Check out this post by Neil Van Niekerk.

He's the "black foamie thing" guy and he's all about bouncing flash to get studio-like results

Nice take; like how the settings really brightened the shots. Bob, what does the "gelled 1/2 cts" reference?

That refers to a gel that you put over the speedlight's lens that is (in strength) 1/2 of the strength of a 1 (full) value Color Temperature Orange.

It's just a shade of orange gel to match indoor tungsten lighting.

When you use a flash indoors and you have regular tungsten lightbulbs, your flash will look too white/blue and so you will have problems white balancing your shot.

Putting a gel on your flash is very common.

You can buy a gel "swatch book" from B&H or Adorama for about $3.00 or so and it has many useful gels.

You just attach them via velcro.

There are also ones to use to match fluorescent lighting.

Thanks! I do almost zero flash photography; but I've seen the reference to gels, and not sure how they worked. Appreciate the info!
