montana red's WPC Entry has been selected for the Photo Critique Forum* to find out what could have done to make it better.

Be nice, but be honest as this may help everyone with their craft. Thank you everyone!

This image piques my curiosity. I wonder if it hasn't got a lot of response because some other viewers, like myself are having a hard time figuring it out. It appears to me an image of a Biblical reference book such as a minister might use, though I can't tell what specific references were being read by the reader who left his glasses behind. Focus appears rather soft in much of the image. What strikes me as odd is that the page on the left appears to have been washed clean of words. Perhaps it is simply out of focus but it also appears much more wrinkled than the page on the right. It is interesting, but I wish I could make out more detail in the components to better figure out what the photographer had in mind.

I will echo all that Minnie has said and add that there is one thing that makes images like this work. That is when a good deal of the print is just slightly out of focus, not illegible but soft with the lens of the spectacles bringing a few poignant words into sharp focus.

Close up with a wide angle to make those words pop right off the page .. more ambient light so you can expose properly for the candle without losing detail you want to shadows. Perhaps when submitting something for a competition do the shot in a place with a clean background. There are miscellaneous items picking up light from the candle in the background.

I like having items in the background. To me it looks like a desk or table that is well used. That the book and candle is not a "staged" shot

This set up can be repeated. Since the title is what it is and the text is about Marriage I presume it has some personal meaning to you.

I have tried only a few set ups in my work. All of them were awful.

All the little bright thingys above the book might best be eliminated. A little higher vantage point might be helpful. The candle is integral but seems to be an after thought rather than a part of the whole and its purpose. The glasses lead me to believe that someone has been reading the Bible with diligent intention by candlelight. The rumpled page draws a lot of attention.

I really like the idea. Sorry that I can't offer much help. As I say; set-ups are not my bag of tea. I think if you worked with this one and made a goodly number of exposures you might just find one that you like.
