You hit on a couple of issues with the first photo - background too busy - red truck behind wagon a distraction - people, trees, fence and other things in background - I like the second photo but agree something is missing - concept is great, but maybe as with the first, to much going on - eliminate bud emplem above harness to start. This may be one of those photo that you just have to keep doing something different until you get what you want. Seems like I have too many of these kinds.

Charles, I think you hit the nail right on, I needed another pair of eyes to confirm, to bad we don't see these things when we take the photo, it would eliminate alot of work, but as a begginer I'm learning thanks for you advise

Just a thought but on number 2 try making the wall B&W it would let the main subject stand out.

I am certainly no expert, but I was wondering what it would look like (#2) if the Bud background were simply blurred somewhat...I like the irony or juxtaposition of the real vs the printed in this pic...but do admit that it is somehow to busy...I don't know how to blur just the back ground or I would try it...someone with more skills is gonna have to do that...and about #1 I agree that the background is just too too busy...otherwise, the main subject is great...Linda

It may be something simple. I'd straighten the horses in the first photo and then crop the bottom and top a tad. If you do blur the surroundings, I bet the end product would be well worth the time.

Free editing software you might want to download: Picnik or Picasa 3. Both are good program and easy for beginners. Picnik allows you to make the background black and white and the subject in color.

The red truck suggest there is a parade in progess, everyone loves a parade. The people on the sidewalk suggest the same thing and also that there exist an interest in this type of horse. Most parades are busy places. But go ahead an rid this story of these elements, like ripping chapters out of a book.

your first image just needs to be cropped close, cut ou person on right and most of wagon on left. looe the street in the foreground and bring the top line towards the drivers heads and it really makes the image stronger. you lose alot of the busy background and bring the focus on to the horses.
