Do any of you have the Apple Airport Extreme router? If so, is it compatible with Windows based systems (laptop, etc)? My Linksys dual channel router is 7 yrs old, so was wondering if that's the reason I can't get a satisfactory signal at the opposite end of my house from where it's located. The distance from my router to where I want to use a tablet is about 65'. Also, are there compatibility issues with modems? My modem is a Verizon issued Westell model 2200, which is about 12 years old. I would not want to create a can of worms re compatibility with router & modem. I remember the difficulty I had getting the Linksys to work. And then, only managed to get connected via the 2.4 ghz channel. Never could get the 5 ghz to work. Oh, and I tried a Linksys router signal booster which proved to be ineffective - mildly putting it.

Any help/advice will be appreciated.

I have the Apple Airport Extreme router and it is amazing. It should work with any computer, a signal is a signal. I was replacing the original Airport Base station because of the range and signal strength, the Extreme is just that, extreme! Now I get signal everywhere in the house and it's strong and fast. You won't go wrong.

Thanks for the reply. I read a description on the web somewhere that said "setup is easy with an iPad, iPod, iPhone, or Mac. I do have one Apple product - iPad Air - that I have yet (about a week of ownership) to get connected to the web. Can't even get to Apple's Application site or iTunes. And that's with the pad right in front of my router showing a strong signal. The pad indicates wi-fi connection, but it just does not work. Again, thanks for the info. I will most likely get the Extreme so I can use my Windows laptop at the other end of my house. But I will first have to solve my iPad problem. I have been hearing for years how much easier Apple products are to use, but for me, oh no :-( .

We have the Apple Time Capsule which is a router that has a 1TB drive in it for backing up your systems incrementally. It works seamlessly with PC's as well.

The router feeds all the information to your computer and other devices and it doesn't matter what the operating system is. I had an older Netgear router that did the same thing and bought a new Netgear N600 Dual Band Router and never had another problem.

I just bought an Apple Airport Extreme. Tried to install, but no dice. Got asked technical info re my provider that I don't have a clue how to get it. Verizon, like a lot of large corp., is not easy to communicate with. I once tried to find out from them if I should upgrade my modem, since at the time it was more than 6 yrs old. Never got a reply. The modem is now 12 yrs old.

What part of it doesn't work ??

Are you able to get devices connected to it ??
Are you just not able to get to the internet ??

Not sure how to answer. My desktop and iPad indicate the router exists, but will not make a network connection. I don't know why routers can't be plug n play like all other pc devices.

Plug your computer directly in using an ethernet cable to see what you get.

Yep, WiFi is WiFi no matter whose label is on the equipment. Apple makes some very nice routers with the latest version of Wifi. They will work with your PC or Android just like they work with my old MacBook Pro.

I had the Apple router hooked up identical to the way the Linksys was: modem cable to "internet" and the ethernet cable from the cpu box (in back) to #1 "ethernet" on the router. That's how I'm hooked up now. Since I'm not using wi-fi on my desktop, it appears to me that the router is simply a conduit for the internet signal from the modem to my desktop.

It works fine except I want to use a tablet at the other end of the house and the signal is too weak to maintain internet connection (although today it's working fine at that). The consensus appears to be that the Apple router sends a more powerful signal. My neighbor has an Apple Airport Extreme and said the same thing. Interestingly, their signal is stronger in my house than is that of the Linksys.

I had to replace my modem two years ago because it was outdated. The cable companies upgrade their speed all the time.

Your modem has one connection that goes to the wan port of your router. The job of the router is to allow multiple devices to share the single connection from your modem. If your router wifi isn't strong enough to reach the other end of the house, apple has a wifi extender which will boost the signal to where you need it.

Thanks. I purchased the Apple Airport Extreme based on several recommendations. I just have not figured out what must be done to get it to activate. The directions, in my opinion, are rather light. My next door neighbor has one, so I plan on calling on him to rescue me.

Did you get the new modem from your provider, or buy it at a store?
