Adapters for Sony hotshoe to standard hotshoe are available at low cost <$10. I have two from E-Bay that work well. Flash wont TTL so I just use manual settings like the "good old days."

I just did this exact thing one month ago. Couldn't be happier I purchased a Sony a55, Minolta 28-80 and a 100-300 lens from Roberts Camera in Indianapolis for about $340. all were in Excellent or Very Good condition. I am already considering upgrading the lenses I am so pleased with the camera. The stabilization is on the sensor, but those with more experience can give feedback on that. The only drawback so far is getting a shoe mount flash. The hotshoe is not Canon/Nikon compatible and the Sony flashes are expensive.
Hope that helps!

I have and use an A3000. I think you can forget the Minolta lenses. You will need the $350 adapter to make them work with AF. They are good lenses. There are cheap adapters that do not allow AF and you will have to guess at setting the f stop.

You will be further ahead by buying the Sigma 19,30, and 60mm 2.8 prime lenses for $600. Not zooms, but optically the most bang for the buck .....and no adapters - with full functions !

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I believe the A3000 is Sony E(Nex) mount and the A3000 is mirrorless. The cameras I am considering use the Sony A mount. Sony has scrambled their nomenclature lately.

There lies the confusion factor. The Sony A-mount family, which includes the A57, A65, A99, and many others is just fine with the Minolta AF lenses.

But the A3000, the A5000 and the latest A6000 are e-mount lenses and part of the NEX family.

So we need to be clear about what he is asking for.

I have the Minolta 9000 and am thinking of getting a Sony camera. Should I get the A55 or the A58? I would love to try out my old lens. Right now it's in my old minolta bag just sitting there since 1986!! In very good condition though and these lenses are really sharp and the film picture quality was good if not better than what we have with our fancier digital cameras. I don't want to spend too much so please suggest a camera just so I can use my old lens!

Buy Canon or Nikon if you like and buy a fifty dollar FotioX adapter for Minolta, shoot in manual or AP , no auto focus of course . Works on FF & APS -C.

What would be the rationale for doing that when buying a Sony Alpha mount body eliminates those sacrifices?

You can buy an adapter for the hot shoe to enable any flash to be used.

One other thing; I seem to recall a caution about some full frame lenses being used on APS-C cameras. Something about them possibly making contact with the sensor...

There is absolutely no problem with using a lens designed for full frame on an APS-C camera.
The problem is normally found with using an APS-C designed lens on a full frame camera but this is not a problem with Sony A mount, so I can use my Sigma 10-20 f3.5 on a Sony A99 and Sony have even enabled me to switch it in camera so it becomes an effective 15-30 f3.5 with no vignetting, although it does go from 24M to 6M. but at least you can still use an APS-C lens, which can't be said for Canon or Nikon.

I shoot with a Sony a55 and use various Minolta glass....a 2.8 Minolta AF Macro is a fine lens for my Ebay work...
the Minolta 1.4 AF 50mm exceptional low light lens....
and I use Sony Alpha lens's also..all of these auto focus just fine...
the Sony flash is exceptional through the lens metering...and can be had on Ebay for a few hundred....
I also own a Nikon DSLR and it is no bargain for lens and flash units....The Sony a55 is bargain priced on e-bay...and Minolta AF Lens are a good value also.

Minolta AF lenses will work on Sony A-mount cameras. Minolta DC and MC lenses need an A-mount adaptor. As more people are moving to Sony the Minolta AF lenses are increasing in price.

Yes, A "mount" - I agree - not A "series" ....

Sony messed up calling the new E-mount cameras "Alpha" and putting the "A" in front. It can be quite confusing since all new Sony cameras are "Axx(x)" but not all are A-mount.
So far I've noticed the A-mount are 2 digit numbers, the E-mount are 3 digit...now if they don't change it up again... :?

I'm biased but I'm nobody's fool either. I just bought my third Sony branded DSLR, the A77II. You can be sure that I wouldn't make the investment if they weren't great cameras. But don't take my word for it, read the reviews - there are many that have been posted.

 This camera pulls the very best out of EVERY A-Mont lens.
