Since the river is so wide its not thick but a lots of pack ice from up river. I have seen Tugs W/ Barges get iced in when at a tank farm offloading. There are 3 USCG ice cutters / buoy tenders which keep things going. Ships just plow through a channel west of center. You can see the USCG ice cutters on my webpage and can also see the channel in my winter pictures. but when you get to West Point Landing 17 miles south where the river is 1/4 or less wide there can be a problem
Damn Woody, that looks cold!!! On occasion we still have ice on river barges when they arrive in the New Orleans area. Now being retired don't know if they had any this year or not but would guess they had.

Well Don it happened yesterday. When I woke I looked on my Marine traffic and saw 5 vessels ancered in a strange place down on the Hudson at West Point Landing 4 tugs and on general bulk carrier. Since I know that area quite well and realize that the river is very narrow there I guessed they got iced in. When i got to the paper there it was. USCG ice cutters form Staten Island were called in. Now I don't know if the bulk carrier got stuck or if the tugs wherein the way
