Hello everyone- Got a new lens, Canon EF Macro lens - 100 mm - F/2.8, and noticed or hear a whirring/clicking sound while the shutter button is half pressed. I didn't noticed this when I rented the same lens a month ago. Is this normal? I have a Canon 7D. Your comments are appreciated.

You are probably hearing the autofocus motor - absolutely normal on any camera/lens with autofocus. When you rented it were you testing where it was noisy maybe? Some lenses are quiter than others.

Yep that's when it does it when you are too close for that lens to focus properly .. take a step back it will stop
or switch it to manual focus

I tested the lens at a botanical garden. Maybe, I was too excited to try it and didn't hear or ignored the noise. Thanks.

Switched to manual focus and it's not as noisy. I'll take my gear in to get checked tomorrow. Thank you.

I shoot Nikon, but if your lens has IS and AF, sometimes that will be what you hear. More so if you are shooting in darker areas. And if you are to close the AF will keep trying to focus. But if in question about it, I would have it checked too.

I agree with Erv. Like the VR in Nikon, what you are hearing with canon is the Optical Image Stabilization(IS) getting into position during half-press and the ultrasonic motor that controls the movement. It is normal! Don't worry about. It is when you don't hear it that you should worry!

I have a 70-300mm IS Canon that has always been a little noisy when half-pressed, I think this is normal since the lens takes very nice pics

I was concerned about this with my first IS lens (Canon 17-55 / 2.8). Turns out a little noise from the IS system is normal.
