I'll be taking a trip with my new D810 to Easter Island and Patagonia. Any thoughts on great photo opportunities that I should be looking out for?

Patagonia is a BIG place. We stayed in Ushuaia for a few days. The whole area around Tierra del Fuego is awesome. We went to the Beagle Channel, Gable Island was really beautiful. Also the Tierra del Fuego National Park was spectacular. We also stayed in El Calafate at a ranch formerly known as Estancia Alice. Its real name is El Gapon. Its on the shores of Lake Argentina, next to some scenic mountains. It comes complete with an operating sheep ranch and real gauchos. The absolute highlight was a day trip to Perito Moreno glacier. Absolutely stunning, make sure to put on the crampons and hike on the ice! Another stop is Puerto Santa Cruz. It is close to Monte Leon National Park. There are some wonderful opportunities for pictures of penguin colonies and sea lions.

On Easter Island you'll need to hire a guide with a car. See the State Park (with the only sand beach?) and the lake up in the caldera with a ceremonial village that has a birds eye view of Bird Island. Lots of partially completed Moai to see in the rocks, semi-wild ponies grazing nearly everywhere. . Mildly strenuous with some rock scrambling possible, mostly optional. Bring lots of film, everything is a photo op.

Yes. Keep your eyes open and don't sleep, that way you won't miss anything. ;-)
I would try and get some night time shots in these areas as you'll be seeing a different part of the sky and all of it from a different angle than what we see in the northern hemisphere. Plus, you'll be so far away from any light pollution ground sources that you should have some magnificent opportunities - weather willing of course. Other than that, the Heads of course, on Easter Island. Torres del Paine in Patagonia... take lots of memory cards!!! And most importantly...have a SAFE and FUN trip!

"...lots of film,..." hmm? LOL. Funny...film. Very funny. What ISO do you recommend he take for this trip...to shoot in his D810? And do you have recommendations on how to load it into his camera? ...;-)

In Patagonia you may be able to get some shots of the Southern Cross constellation... happy shooting!
