I am in the market for a wide angle lens for my d610. I have been looking at the Nikon 20 1.8g which retails at B & H for $800. Recently, I have been looking at the Tamron 15 to 30 2.8 which was released as recently at 1/30/15. The reviews on this Tamron lens is great and when compared to the legendary Nikon 14 to 24 2.8 many say that it is at least as sharp and some say that it is better. the 15 to retails for $1,200.

I currently own only the Nikon 85 1.8g, which is tack sharp, and an old Nikon 24 to 120 3.5 to 5.6 left over from my film days. I shoot mainly landscape.

Finally, the 20g 1.8 can use a CPL filter while wth the Tamron 15 to 30 2.8 I will have to buy the filter holder and filters.

I know that the Tamron will provide me with versatility while the Nikon 20g 1.8 will not. What do you think?

As one who does landscape also, I too had the similar conundrum. Let me ask:

Do you value 2.8 more than filters for landscape?

I chose to go with the 16-35 f4 because I knew I would use filters more than I would 2.8 for landscapes.

However...I will add either - a Rokinon/Samyang 14mm 2.8 manual lens, OR - the Tokina 16-28 2.8 for star photography at some point.

Thank you for your reply. I also looked at the Tokina which is a bargain at that price. After I saw the reviews on the Tamron 15 to 30 2.8 it is hard to look at anything else. I have two CPL filters both for my Nikon 85 1.8g and for my old film lens the Nikon 24 to 120 3.5 to 5.6. which is a so so lens since it really old technology.

Thanks again.

Why a 2.8 for landscapes?

IMHO, you do not need AF or 2.8 ( or 1.8) for landscapes ! If you do not need the latest and greatest and do not mind saving money with a used lens, the Tamron SP 20-40 and Sigma 20-40 are very good lenses. If you do need the latest and greatest, Zeiss 21mm - no AF.

Worth a look at the Sigma 12-24mm too. Not quite up to the Nikon 14-24, but close, and less than half the price. Won't take filters without holder though.
