Great picture of the lions Joe.

Whenever I see someone shooting with a big lens, tripod and large camera bag I ask:

Do you wear a hernia belt?

Camera, lens, tripod, gimbal head and speedlight weigh in at a little under 14 pounds. That would be a lot to carry around all day, but I normally choose one exhibit and spend all my time there so I'm only carrying my gear in and out.

How do like the new setup? Just recently purchased a wonderful slightly used D3 and am looking to upgrade a telephoto. Have been renting a Sigma 120-300 2.8. Wonderful lense but what a workout! Lugged that puppy around the Circuits of America race track for the Formula One race last October. Was ready to put it down after three days of walking around a 3.4 mile track. By the way ... Is that your Mustang?

I picked up the D3 about a year ago and I really love it. Friday was the first time shooting the 150-600. My first impressions are mixed. The image quality is excellent but the lens had a tendency to hunt even at max aperture. The lens and camera weigh 10 pounds so walking around with it all day will be a real workout.
While I do own 2 Mustangs the one in my avatar is not mine, if only it were. I shot it a few years ago at the Coronado Speed fest.

Glad you liked the photo Earl. Now would be a great time of year to visit. Get out of the cold and enjoy some great weather.

In San Diego any time of year is nice. In July of 98, I left Lindbergh at 1100 hrs at a mild 69 F. I arrived in Kansas City at 1800 where the temp was 99 with a heat index of 108. I would live in San Diego except for the cost, the taxes, and the fact that I don't know which of my possessions will be illegal next week.

Hopefully, you never got the comment, "gee, must be great to have that wonderful equipment to take pictures for you!"

Thanks for sharing those cats!

Fantastic photo. I love the San Diego Zoo. You could spend three complete days and not see it all. I have never been to the other. It never ceases to amaze me what people assume just from your gear. :-) Cheers.

I hit reply to my own message instead of edit. Ugh, is it Monday?

That's normal ! I got the same before. Later, the guy became my friend after purchasing cameras, lenses and big lenses. For me, a pro photographer, seeing anyone with camera and big lenses, I would keep close and ask some questions.

Great shot.... very nice lens... Congrats on being the resident Xpert photographer..... I often find people in large groups especially in downtown Chicago routinely hand me cameras and say please take my picture? And often say "oh you have a professional camera it must take great pictures" I am sure you can take a good picture of us.... I just smile and take the picture they want....

I was there last Friday too. Got there when it opened and saw the Lemurs, Gorilla, Tigers, Lions and Cheetahs. They were all active too. That was rare. In fact, there was a guy there with a lens like yours at the Lion exhibit that might have been you. He was set up there for quite a while. I only brought my 70-200 f/2.8 with a 1.4 and a 2x because I didn't feel like lugging around my big lens that day.

I use to get the "you must have a good camera" line when I showed my photos to friends. I broke them of that habit when I'd hand them my camera and tell them to have a go. None of them even knew how to use the camera in manual mode.
