Does anyone have a battery and remote release for the Canon 50d? I'm going on a photography trip to Iceland and don't trust the extra battery I now have. It loses its charge far too quickly.
Also, for tripod landscapes it would be nice to have a remote release. I'm having trouble finding one. Canon's website listed a RS-60E3, but I read a review and it was poor.
Any input and/or items for sale would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!
I have 6 (BP-511A) and am willing to let 2 of them go

What exactly was the nature of the complaint you read in a review? I use that cable release with my 70D and it functions just fine. And when I go home tonight, I'll be happy to try it on my old 50D for you.

That's great, thanks. For what price?

The review said that it didn't work consistently and was "flimsy."

If you check the owner reviews at B&H you will see that out of 555 reviews only 14 stated that the remote was unreliable or not durable. I still have one someplace that I used to use on my 70D and it worked just fine.

Thank you for the input. Is this the same one that worked on your 50d?

Never had a 50D but it worked fine on my T3i and 70D. As far as I know, Canon only used 2 types of plugs: The mini-jack, which is what this remote is, and the newer 3 pin which is what is on my 6D and 7DII. Personally, I like the older mini-jack better. Easier to insert and it fits more securely. Don't know why Canon changed to the 3 pin. The 60D also takes the RS-60E3, just like the 70D so my guess would be that the 50D takes the same. The only problem I have had with both of Canon's corded remotes is that the button is designed to lock when pushed down and slid forward slightly. Handy if, for example, you are using the "Bulb" setting. If you are not paying attention when you shoot it is very easy to lock it accidentally. No harm really, unless you are set to shoot multiple shots. The shutter will just keep firing until you unlock the button, which is quick and easy after you have scratched your head and wondered why your camera has become possessed! :-D

Canon has been confusing about the shutter releases for the x0D line of cameras, and you're barking up the wrong tree. I just got my 50D, 70D, and both releases together. The 50D takes the 3-pin RS-80N3, which is not the remote switch you are looking at. As a matter of fact, if you open the flap for flash cord/remote switch, you can see that the remote switch socket takes 3 pins.
Neither of these RSs is "flimsy." Some people don't treat their equipment with any respect; those ham-handed louts then blame the gear instead of their own lack of proper care and handling.
FWIW, the RS-80N3 seems a bit more rugged than the other, but I suspect that it's just because the wire bundle is bigger.
davidk2020 is correct. The 50D takes the RS-80N3. About $40-$45. I had one and it went missing so I replaced it with a Vello for under $10. They both worked fine but the Canon had a locking collar on the plug and the Vello doesn't. A nice feature but I still think the mini-jack was better.
