I have the 85 and I use it a lot for people. It's not so short that it distorts and it is not so long that you can't move back and get full length without having to raise you voice to talk to the subject.

devolution,
Your 85mm 1.8 is the one of the best there is. As well 70-200mm2.8 is other excellent and if you have more people in the exposure 24-70mm2.8.These three is most used with wedding and studio shoots.

I have a question that might help you answer your own question. It helped me make the decision when someone asked me.

Take a look at any portraits you have already shot. Have you taken most of them at around 85mm, or have most of them been longer shots?

If you say 85mm is about where you usually use your current zoom lens, then a prime at 85mm makes sense, especially since you can let in a bit more light and are likely to get slightly sharper images.

But if you find you have been using 100mm or more, then skip the new lens and look at one in your more comfortable range.

Hey all you Hoggers and Hoggettes! I want to get into portraits. I have a Nikon D700. Nikkor 28-300, 50 f/1.8 and a 80-200 f/2.8. All FX lenses. Thinking about a Nikkor 85 f/1.8. Do I need this or will the 80-200 f/2.8 be suffice? Also, any opinions on good inexpensive lighting kits? Thank you all!

You really have what you need with the zoom lenses set and 100mm but if you insist on purchasing a lens, I would suggest the Nikkor 105, 2.8 macro lens. It is a great little lens and can be used for Macro also.

If you don't mind having a honker of a lens hanging off the front of your camera the Zoom will certainly work--Scot Kelby uses one--but the fewer things you have to fuss with, likely, the better job you'll do--I have several of the mid range zooms--but would't think of using them for portraits--Scott to the contrary.

I shoot mainly Canon. I use my 70-200 most of the time for portraits. Second choice is the 85/1.8
The 85 works nicely on either a crop or FF camera. The 70-200 is also a nice combo, but for portraits I use it mainly on my FF.

Wish folks would say if they use a FF or Crop camera makes a differance. I use a Tamron 35-105 f/2.8 fixed and think it is great for groups to head shots. - Dave

Not sure how serious you are about portrait photography.
You have a good camera and some nice lenses that will work for portraits. But if you really want serious portrait lenses the 85mm f/1.4D IF is very good but the 135mm DC is phenomenal!
