I am considering a monopod for my 60D and long lens (500mm). Birding. Any advice would be appreciated. Cheapie? Criteria for purchase? Height? Manufacturers to consider or avoid?
Thank in advance for the expert advice.

Mono's are OK for birds on the ground, but for birds in flight it is worthless. Tridod with a ball head or gimbal head would be needed. Or use OS and hand-hold, thats my solution.
You could use a monopod if the head would swivel, and the photographer can move, otherwise due as MT Shooter says. He gives good advice. :D
I go hand held for birds unless perched.Rest of time almost always use a cheapie monopod, often leaning it against something so it is near as steady as a tripod.Have a tripod, sets in closet.
Thanks all. Will put info to good use.

I recently purchased a Monfroto 680B along with their ball head as an add-on accessory. Very fine quality. The Manfroto has a similar model that has a tripod like device built-in, that folds into the bottom tube of the device when not needed.
Looks like a stick figure with three legs.
Adorama has it. Check it out there, if you like.
Make sure you get one that is tall enough, stooping over to get every shot will spoil you fun.
