We are moving my brothers sport fisherman from Morehead City to Key West Fl for a few months. Trip is roughly 1000 miles along the Inter-coastal Water Way for about 10-12 days. The question I am having relates to which camera to bring. I have both the Canon 5D lll & a 7D. Do I just bring a 24-105, or a 70-200, or my 300 mm, 1.4 T/C or really load up with the 150-500 mm. Or just bring my Sony Nex 3 and keep the good stuff out of the salt air? The problem is flying to NC and flying back from Key West with what ever I bring. Has anyone done this trip? Trying to keep the weight down. What away to spend the Ides of March!

Perfect solution is have me come with you and carry the bags
:) sounds like a nice trip ,,,,,,,,good luck Ned
Definitely bring the 24-105 and the 150-500 lenses. Not sure which camera to advise bringing as I only have the Canon T3i and the Canon SX50. You might check airfare out of Miami as the fares will be cheaper and have more flight options than Key West. You will have many great photo ops on your boat trip down the IC and you will want your long lens to capture some of the awesome sights you will see along the way. Then the 24-105 will be a great walk around lens for when your in Key West or other Ports of Call on your way down.

Cool trip. I went along from GA, to right down below Daytona, back in the 80's, down the ICW. Half of me says go light, half says, take everything ya can. You shouldn't have any trouble keeping it out of the salt air, with proper packing.
I used to live in Macon, but escaped. Enjoy the adventure.

Some years ago we have did the northern part of the ditch from Cambridge, MD to Albemarle Sound via the Dismal Swamp Canal and back via the North River and the A & C Canal. Back then my main camera was a Canon AE-1 with the standard 50mm lens and an 80-250 Zoom; we also had a pocket sized Canon digital with a zoom for on the boat and close shots.
You will mostly be on wider stretches of water and shooting thins some distance away. I think you will want a standard +/- 50mm lens for the closer shots on the boat, but suspect you will mostly want/need the 150-500 lens. I don't believe I ever took the longer lens off
To save carrying a lot of extra stuff, why not put a shorter lens on one camera and the 150-500 on the other?
Have a great trip.
Wow, that brings back memories! Used to sail the Intercoastal on a tugboat out of Norfolk years ago. Still remember laying up at Hobucken one time and the two girls I met! Ah, southern hospitality! You will have a ton of photo ops. Take as much as you can. I envy you. Have a great trip and post some photos.
It is about $100 cheaper out of Miami the problem is the 120 mile trip from the Keys.

There used to be a shuttle bus that ran from the Keys to MIA. You might check to see if its still in operation. Or try to find a shared ride.

This is just my opinion. Take the 7d and only 1 lens (probably the 70-200), That way you won't ever change lenses and risk getting salt spray or air into the camera. Keep the gear in a plastic bag while shooting to protect it. However if you are a pro and will sell your photos ,take everything, whatever you ruin you can write off.
