Used a team of horses to rake hay - the tractor, a 1937 John Deere B, was being used to cultivate corn. Milked the cows by hand - no milking machine. Cleaned the gutters with a shovel - no barn cleaner. Used a pick axe to loosen up the silage and then with a silage fork throw the silage down the chute - no silo unloader. Am I complaining? Heck no. It was really hard work for a kid but as I got older, I realize the value of hard work and learning responsibility at an early age.

Everything you mentioned I experienced and more. Would I have changed anything if I could ?? Sure I would. I would have stepped aside and let the cow charge past me instead of letting her drag me down the length of the barn between her shoulder and the wall. Those steaks were pretty fast until they got to the freezer.
My body is 20 years older than it should be, but it was worth it.

No! Quit cold turkey in 1968 (a two pack a day habit) and haven't had one since. During the 15 years that I did smoke (started at 13), I dabbled with pipes and various pipe tobaccos, as well as cigars, but found myself eventually inhaling everything, so I went back to cigs.

Your question got me to thinking about my smoking experience. When I first began smoking, a pack cost less than a quarter (I remember paying a quarter for a pack and getting some change back!). When I quit in 1968, a pack was about 45 cents at the Stop and Shop.

Then I began to remember the various brands that I tried—I was always looking for a better smoke. Among them: Luckies, Chesterfield, Camels, Pall Mall, Viceroy, Parliament, Tareyton, Old Gold, Raleigh, Newport, Kool, Kent, Winston, L&M, Marlboro, Embassy, English Ovals, Players, Philip Morris, and Gitanes. Probably several others that I have forgotten.

Luckily for me, there was a tobacco shop not too far from the farm where I grew up.

Looks like a Mother-mate-mother locomotive for your avatar. Aka a slug in the middle.

Good Eye Ka2azman. I shot these cow-calk arrangement in Az close to the interchange with the Kennekott Copper Co. local. That was back in 78,. a long time ago. Still shooting trains, though. Get a kick out of the sounds and size of them.
BTW, slugs had all the electrical hook-ups for traction motors, brakes, but no prime mover aka, no engine. Some were hand-built from scratch such as my avatar, or used old locomotives removing the prime mover and using everything else. The empty space was probably filled with concrete for weight.

I'm in my 80th year too, born in Brooklyn, grew up in Brooklyn and Queens, lived in the Middle East for 8-1/2 years then Rio/SaoPaulo for another 3 before coming back to NYC--but I can relate that I remember at least 95% of the items listed in this string so far, so I guess Brooklyn and Queens in the "Early days" were RURAL....

Who remembers when windshield washers were a bag on the floor you pressed with your foot.

I still carry tube sand for traction in the winter.
I can't stand chopped and boiled greens like spinach because it reminds me of silage.
The Sons of the Pioneers are awesome, Tumbling Tumbleweeds is still one of my favorite songs and don't forget Ghost Riders in the Sky.
I helped my cousins dig their last outhouse in 1973

This post has been going on for days now. Surprised it took this long for somebody to remember Boomtown. But it was a local thing. My best friend was on it once.
