Going the e-mail rounds. Thanks Bob.

A US Air Force C-130 was scheduled to leave Thule Air Base, Greenland , at midnight during a winter month. During the pilot's preflight check, he discovers that the latrine holding tank is still full from the last flight. So a message is sent to the base and an airman who was off duty is called out to take care of it.

The young man finally gets to the air base and makes his way to the aircraft only to find that the latrine pump-truck has been left outdoors and is frozen solid, so he must find another one in the hangar, which takes even more time. He returns to the aircraft and is less than enthusiastic about what he has to do. Nevertheless, he goes about the pumping job deliberately and carefully (and slowly) so as not to risk criticism later.

As he's leaving the plane, the pilot stops him and says, 'Son, your attitude and performance has caused this flight to be late and I'm going to personally see to it that you are not just reprimanded but punished.'

Shivering in the cold, his task finished, he takes a deep breath, stands tall and says, 'Sir, with all due respect, I'm not your son; I'm an Airman in the United States Air Force. I've been in Thule , Greenland , for 11 months without any leave, and reindeer's asses are beginning to look pretty good to me. I have one stripe; it's 2:30 in the morning, the temperature is 40 degrees below zero, and my job here is to pump s**t out of an aircraft. Now, just exactly what form of punishment did you have in mind?'

My dad did two tours in Thule. One involved hiking a glacier picking up parts of a B-52 that went down. I have some pics somewhere of the snow and ice at the top of a two story barracks with tunnels to get to the surface. He told me one soldier was driving a snowplow one day and took the top off of the base commanders vehicle. I'm starting to wonder if that was accidental.

Semper Fi Now I really enjoyed this one. Knew a few Officers who

would try to punish a young enlisted man for something like that

I can relate to that. Been there a few times (Tennessee Air National Guard-KC97) back in the 60's. We used to rotate with other ANG tanker units all over the world. Germany was a full time rotation of ANG units. We used to ferry fighters from US to Germany and/or England. Kind of neat to lay on the boom operators back and watch a fighter refuel. Here is a pilot behind a chrome mask flying a fighter with every known kind of ordinance looking right at you some 30 feet away. You just hope he is having a good day, eh? Ah, the good ole days. Anyone else have that experience?
An ole AFMSG

Having spent some time in the Air Force back in the day, I would bet that pilot was a Lieutenant Colonel. My thinking on them and their attitudes was that when they decided to make the military a career they figured by the time they retired they would have at least two stars on their shoulder. But after 25 or more years and they are only an LC with little hope of even becoming a bird colonel, they are pissed and frustrated so they take it out on anybody beneath them.
