Hey Hoggers! Just bought a new Nikkor 80-200 f/2.8 AF-D zoom. I noticed there is no serial number on the lens. It is a USA model. The number is on the box and the 5 year extended warranty card. Is this normal? Also, is there any way to determine the year of manufacture? Thanks.

It's Laser engraved onto bottom rear of aperture ring.

You may have to look hard, but everything from Nikon should have a serial number on it....
I had to look several times and find a site that tells where it is located before it jumped out at me.

Nikon provides this:

http://support.nikonusa.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/8463/~/where-is-my-serial-number

This might help in determining the year, or you may be able to get the MFG date out of Nikon by providing support a serial number.

Try here for production dates. Scroll down about 2/3 to "Tele Zoom Professional".

It will be on the underside of the lens in a long narrow box and is small. Since somehow my eyes got old while the rest of me stayed young, I need to use a magnifying glass to read it.

I also check to make sure the number on the lens and warranty card match.

Checked the number on the site. After 2006 the end run stops at 1075111. My number starts with 108. Does that mean it was built recently? Like within the last few years?

The serial number will be either 6 or 7 digits. The latest series is 7 digits. 108XXXX will indicate made in the last 2 or 3 years, Nikon still manufactures this lens today.
The serial number is on the bottom of the aperture ring, directly opposite the aperture scale numbers.
