When you say "nikon flash", do you mean Nikon brand flash or flash for Nikon?
In case you are considering other brands I can recommend Neewer 750II flash for Nikon.

I bought it recently and it works very well with my d5100. It has slave modes S1 and S2, so you can use it off camera, ITTL, metal hot shoe-and all this for $53.
It's a good choice if you don't want to spend a lot o money.

The best buy in a Nikon brand flash for the D5200 is a good used SB-600, they are plentiful in great condition. For brand new, the Nikon SB-700 is a good choice and the Meike MB-910 is also fully compatible.

The Nikon SB-910 is the best flash made by Nikon for the D5200. There are other flashes that are better like Metz and Quantum Qflash.
Personally I use a number of old flashes that work well for me but if you are confused about flash I think it's best to buy a Nikon brand flash. Youngnuo, Nissin and Neewer are decent and inexpensive but may confuse novice flash users even further.

The SB-400 is a great flash! Discontinued, but readily available for ~$150.

The 400 is just OK, Not great. Marginally better than the pop up.

You're right, of course... but for me it is perfect... cycles faster than the pop-up flash and can be bounced, which satisfies most of my needs and it is very small and so easy to carry with me...

SB700 is the matching one. While many will work including the very expensive SB900 you'll likely find the SB700 does what you need.
BTW some get confused about using the flash off-camera with the D5xxx model cameras because they don't have "Commander" mode. Rest assured you can fire the SBxxxs off camera using the pop-up flash on the D5200 as the trigger in full ttl mode. You might want to get the $15 shield Nikon sells for the camera's pop-up flash when using it that way. Then the pop-up doesn't affect the exposure but still fires the off-camera flash.

My wife was agitating for a flash for Christmas so I bought her that one. It works and seems robust. It puts out a lot more flash power than the SB700...maybe even more than the SB900.
As I expected she hasn't used it yet. But I'm sure she will next time we go on a cave tour that allows cameras. That's what made her lust after one.

It depends, ofc, on how much flash you need. It also depends on whether you want to stick with Nikon Brand. If you shoot a lot of flash I would suggest sticking with Nikon. If not, I'd investigate some of the off-brands which can also perform the TTL and command functions which the Nikon flashes do, as well as any other functions.
