we went to Savanah two years ago. They have a wonderful old town and shops on the riverfront. They have Tybee island not too far away that was just beautiful and Charleston is not too far either where you can go aboard an air craft carrier a sub etc. There are also some plantations but we only went to one on our way back from Tybee. I loved Savannah. Hope you do too.

I spent a couple of days there for a wedding last October. You could easily spend a week or more there with the historic homes, the wonderful parks spaced out every four blocks from the waterfront outwards and everything along the waterfront. I'd get a map ahead of time. You can do a lot on foot and they have tour buses you can ride around in as well. Very tourist friendly. Be prepared to gain some weight! Good luck.

Good Lord, man. Savannah is a SMALL city loaded with historical squares and buildings, beaches, ports and rivers. You need only drive around for 2-3 hours and you will have seen all there is to see and have plenty of ideas for shots.

Have fun!

You may drive around Savannah in a few hours. What an injustice to describe this historic city. I live on Hilton Head Is. It takes about an hour for us to travel to Savannah. Perhaps it depends on your interst. There are no hills. Walking is not challenging. Our camera club spent a day and the variety of images taken was outstanding. Traveling to nearby sites could occupy weeks. Google will provide lots of information. I would be happy to chat.

Savannah is wide angle heaven. I shot 21mm for a whole day and got some great photos. Congretation Mickve Israel, founded way back in 1733 is one of my favorite examples of photogenic architecture, but there are 100's more in the town.

My daughter went to school in Savannah. We always loved going down to enjoy the city. There is so much to offer. If you are into Street Photography, I can't imagine a better place than the waterfront. It is hopping 24-7. Plus, you can jump in for a fantastic meal when you take a break. The squares are also beautiful to get great photos. Tons and Tons of history there you can document, lots of Ghosts too!!! Have fun!! I really miss visiting now that my daughter has graduated.

I'd say that Bonaventure Cemetery is a must for photographers:
http://www.bonaventurehistorical.org/ Not only is it beautiful,
but there are many unique and interesting grave stones. Also, Wormsloe Historic Site: http://www.gastateparks.org/Wormsloe
and Forsyth Park:

I often use Google Earth to scout sites.
If you enable Photos in the primary database, You will see clusters of photos posted by photographers who have previously been there.
You can look at the photos to see if that location is of interest to you.
You can also use street view to looks at possible locations near roads.
I just spent a few minutes browsing around Savanna on Google earth. On place I would want to visit if I went there is the Savanna National Wildlife Refuge it is located across the river from the main part of the city.
Colonial Park Cemetery looks interesting and not far from there is Chippewa Square in the historic district.
There in just a few minutes, I have researched a day's worth of shooting.

Best advice I got before our Savannah trip was to take one of the tour busses. That way, you can see most everything and take some pics on the bus and then walk or drive back later for more time. The tour package we chartered also had a stop and ride option. You can get off at any of the stops, walk around and shoot to your heart's desire and then get back on the next bus at the stop where you got off and move down the line a ways.

Of course, there are museum and home tours which will not be available unless you get off the bus. The infamous Mercer House - featured in the films,"Midnight on the Garden of God and Evil" and "Glory" is a must, as is Bonadventure cemetery, to which you will have to drive, as the tours don't go there.

For bonafide history buffs who will want to drive some, you can visit Forts Jackson and Pulaski, a bit south pf Savannah proper, and both chock full of photo ops.

If you're into beaches, Tybee Island is a must. In Savannah's historic district there are also ghost tours, carriage tours and lots of wonderful restaurants and bistros. My lady and I stayed ay the 17 Hundred 90 Inn (haunted inn) in the historic district. Tons of stuff within an easy walk.

Savannah is a unique place and rest assured, you will find photo ops every which way you look. We're going back, fer sure.
