I have been an avid photographer for MANY years and have thousands of 35mm slides. There a few hundred I would like to convert to a digital format. I have read reviews online about slide to digital converters but would appreciate any advise from the wealth of knowledge possessed and willingly shared by the Ugly Hedgehogs. Thank you!

I am using a Plustek OpticFilm 8200i AI that I bought through Amazon. I have finished converting about 600 slides, and it does an outstanding job. The SilverFast software that comes with it is excellent and easy to use. It is not fast (takes 4 slides at a time), but it has restored some very old slides to better than original condition.

Thank you but I've decided to go with a Wolverine slide to digital converter.

I bought a Nikon Coolscan 5000ED slide scanner with a 50 slide capacity holder for automatic loading and scanned thousands of my slides. On my website, www.theearlybirder.com, any images with ID numbers less than 3000000, are slide scans.

I have an Epson scanner that I've used to scan 35mm slides, medium format slides, and panorama slides. Be patient! High quality scans take time. I advise scanning to tiff format. I then used PS Elements and Photomatix Pro to squeeze the most out of the images. Noiseware is also useful.

I agree with bsprague on the Epson V600. I've had one for years and have scanned thousands of things, although never slides. It's a tough, versatile scanner.

Another possibility - ScanCafe. For about $0.33 per slide, they will give you beautiful results.

I used a less expenxive solution. I bought one of these from Ebay. Vintage Canon Film Adapter FP-100 & Power Supply
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Canon-Film-Adapter-FP-100-Power-Supply-/171669477148?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item27f84c571c for under $20.
With my macro lens attached I have copied hundreds of slides and like the result better than my Epson V500.

After years of procrastination I tackled the issue of digitizing my slide archive (several thousand slides) and tried one of the low-cost scanners on the market - which I gave up after a few attempts. Neither dynamic range nor resolution (1800dpi I guess) were acceptable. I tried another way: I transformed my Durst 605 enlarger into a copy stand and dusted my old Multiblitz slide duplication strobe. The first trials with my K3 look promising in terms of resolution and dynamic range at a record cycle time. I tried both my macro lenses - 35mm and 100mm on APS sensor and I can't see any difference. It's more a question of ergonomics: the 35mm is positioned very close too he slide while the 100mm makes the work easier.

I believe you will be very satisfied with the ease of use and image quality if you are not a "pixel peeper". I paid over $800 to send many slides off to ScanCafe who ships the slides to India and they took over two months to return. The results were only slightly better than the ones I got from my Wolverine and it cost less than $100. Each wolverine scan takes less than 5 seconds. I moved to the wolverine after having a dedicated Minolta slide scanner that cost me over $300 and each scan took over 3 minutes each. I didn't have that kind of time. Sold my minolta on eBay and Loved my wolverine scanner until I sold it too because my conversions were finished! It may not satisfy a professional, but all of my extended family members were very pleased seeing the digital pics from 30 - 40 - 50 - years ago. Mine was the FD2 300 and the current models are surely even better.

I had the same situation several years ago. I ended up bringing them to an outside source. It cost me a few dollars but they did a great job and I have no regrets!

Would you like any samples of what an Epson can do? I've got some Nikon shot Kodachromes from Iran when the Navy sent me there as a pilot in the early 70's. We had manual focus then and not many are perfect. Some are pretty good.

Minolta SRT-101 user here , now shooting w/ a Canon digital.
What did you fly? Private pilot here... You Navy pilots are the cream of the crop! Air show at NAS Lakehurst in 1971 had the Blue Angels....they were flying the F4 @ the time. I wanted to fly military but an astigmatism in my left eye kept me out, thanks for serving.
