Money to spend is limited. Nikon only. Will be used mostly indoors for recording large catering events with table set-ups; formal arrangements with glassware, etc. No extra lights except an add-on hot-shoe flash. The photos will be processed through Adobe CS-6. Photos May be used for the web or 8X10 prints. The outfit is for a novice; I will be the mentor.
What do you think of my choices? What would you do?
D5500 expensive but low noise at higher ISO, articulating touch-screen. $900 or $1000 with kit lens
D5300 cheaper than D5500 $700 or $800 with the 18-55mm kit lens
D7000 $500 at Amazon
Used Nikon 16-85mm VR (24mm equiv. wide angle) about $600
Tamron 17-70mm 2.8-4 $400

Because the D7000 has the built in focus motor I think that is the one I would choose. I also have a Tokina AT-X 165 Pro DX f2.8 that I would pick as the lens of choice.
Lad, I would say that ANYTHING that will give you a less distorted selfie to use for your Avitar would be a GOOD thing!!

How about a D5300 with a Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 OS HSM? There's not much difference between the D5300 and D5500 and the Sigma is faster and sharper than the 18-55.
D7000 with the 50mm F/1.8D

Does not look distorted to me at all. I find lots of people who ask pretty dumb questions look like this!!!!!!
Tough crowd here on Hedgehog.
D7000 with one of the used lenses a couple of cheap Yongnuo YN-565EX flashes and some wireless triggers. I know you only said one flash, but if you're doing it right, you're going to need to get the flash off the camera in order to properly illuminate the space.

+1. You definitely don't want a flash on the hot shoe.

Since you are shooting static subjects in varying light conditions I suggest you look into a used D7000 and either a 35mm f/1.8 or a 50mmn f/1.8 lens.
Spend the money you save on a decent tripod. :D
Jerry
Save your money. Look at the 3300. Will pretty much do it all. Ken Rockwell has a good review on this body. Stick with the kit lens which has VR.

You could be making an assumption here.
I hope you are not, but just sayin' you could be...
Thank you for all the suggestions.
Embarrassed to say my avatar is an improvement. :(

Camera covered, I'd like to suggest a different Speedlight.
I got a
Yongnuo 560 IV before Christmas to have an off-camera flash.
I set it to slave mode (S1) and that triggered it to my camera's flash.
It totally upped my Christmas shots!
(And the IPhones never triggered it. ;) )
I used it tripod mounted on a second story balcony bounced off the ceiling. Totally backlighted my shots. So pleased!
Plus I turned on it's little sound feature and knew when it had fired and recharged. Nobody complained.
