Don't know about the Hudson River, but down here on the Chesapeake Bay one of the final tests that prospective Bay Pilots have to take and Pass, is to fill in a Bay map with every bouy, daymark, Lighthouse, & Range Marks, etc. on the bay from east of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel to the head of the Bay from memory, and it has to be damn near perfect to pass. Radar has now made life much easier, but if it fails or in a "pea soup fog", they have to know the points and courses.
