I have the D3100. I purchased this model because it was in my price range. I can't complain about it. It is doing me a good job for my needs. If you ask me if I dream of a D800, I would say "yes"

Hi,
If you haven't looked yet, check out KenRockwell.com. Gives a good review of the D3100.
I have the D3100 and love it, it does everything I ask of it and does it very well and at a "good" price too. It came with the 18-55mm VR lens and I added about a month later the 55-300mm VR telephoto lens(which rarely ever comes off the body)And as smackwater said above check out Ken Rockwell's site as he rates the D3100 very high.

My daughter-in-law bought the D3100 at the same time I bought my D5100 last year.
I have read a dozen books, bought many accessories including an expensive flash, and worked at learning all the functions and features. She has added nothing to her kit, read nothing, and leaves her D3100 on Auto.
Her pictures are much better than mine.

Try concentrating on composition the camera's today are really smarter than we are.
I use auto most of the time, but if the situation calls for it will go to the various manual options available.
I have not seen a comparison of auto vs manual run off. Or can you pick the one shot using manual settings.

LOL, for some reason, this hit me as being really funny this morning. I, too, don't have this camera, but Viscountdriver, I send my Welcome to UHH as well. Cheers.

I have the same camera. Some suggestions...... Read, have 2 bateries, shot more shots 1 is as cheap as 100, enjoy it.
Congrats on the D3100. I love mine. As mentioned you may want to add he 55-300mmVR zoom. It really adds a lot of reach. You won't believe you eyes. An extra battery and memory chip are a good ideas also.
ONE WORD OF CAUTION: The EN-EL14 battery had 2 models. Be sure you get the one for the D3100. With my camera the after-markets and the ones for the P7000 p&s won't be recognized by your camera. I'd also pick up a field manual from Amazon. Good Luck and welcome to the Hog. Don
Oh, yeah...Scott Kelby has a very nice overview video of the D3100 on his WEB site. You can do a free trial of his videos for one day which will allow you to see this.

I have this lens and find it quite good.
Note that it has a "tripod aware" feature so you can use VR with it when you are using a tripod. You can read up on it on Nikon's site.
The battery info is good. The others are much cheaper but won't work. I find the battery to be quite long lived on my D5100. I have set my screen to not preview after every shot which may contribute. I just make a habit of switching the one in the camera and the one on the wall each time I go out. There was an issue with getting them a few months back so you may not want to wait till the last minute.

My son has a D3100 and loves it. I gave him my old 55-200 lens when I got my 55-300 1.4

55-300 1.4? You must have the only one! I'll bet MTShooter would want one of those.
