Here is a little guy that I found on one of my garden plants. Took me a while to find it's name. It is a Banded Tussock moth caterpillar.

When I was a young kid I would pick something like this up and take it inside to play with. Since you've given us such a nice photo of it though Corolyn, I guess I should leave it where it is.

You wouldn't want to pick this one up. Those little brushlike appendages sting.

Nice one, Corolyn. If you had ticked the box, we could enlarge it for a better view. Maybe you just forgot? :-)

Nice shot Corolyn! Yes my wife found out the hard way when she sat on a species with stinging hairs.

I've seen these and didn't know what kind they were. This image is very pretty, Corolyn. It has a bit of artsy about it that I really like.

Thank you all for the compliments. Sometimes it is hard to get something like this in good focus. Mainly because of my eyesight. But hope that will be fixed soon. I don't think a download would give you any more details because of that. But I can tell you that he was about 1 inch long. Not a very big one.

I used to play with caterpillars all the time when I was a kid. That is, until I found one that looked at least close to what this one looks like. I've been stung by everything from scorpions to wasps, and never has anything hurt quite like the sting I got from that woolly worm looking thing. Now as an adult, I still fear ALL of them, as I don't know which ones sting.

You can be tolerably sure if it has barb looking or cute little brushes that it will be a stinger. It has to protect itself after all. Some camouflage themselves others are brightly colored to show they are poisonous to predators. But for the most part caterpillars are harmless to humans. I too played with them and all sorts of insects and got my quota of stings from wasps, hornets, and when Papa raised bees I would walk barefoot through the cool clover in summer and stepped on many a honeybee. My parents were sympathetic but allowed me to still go barefoot. Mom had her own remedies for those times and the pain of the sting was nothing to the pain as the foot healed and itched like crazy.
