Yellowstone Day Hikes

I didn't want to change the focus of "MarkintheRV 19 Days in Yellowstone" so I started a separate thread.

I will be headed to Yellowstone for the fifth time in September and have lots of experience with the usual spots throughout the park. So, does anyone have any experience with day hikes that are "off the beaten path" that they particularly enjoyed. Photo opportunities are important and we are experienced hikers.

I'll be there in late September to extend my hiking from the Yellowstone Picnic Area (Beginning of Lamar Valley) and work toward Specimen Ridge. Not the whole thing! Got forced back by protective Big Horns at calving time in June.

Will also do the Beaver Pond Trail in Mammoth Springs.

The Hellroaring Creek hike as far as the suspension bridge.

Trout Lake is short and offers some opportunities.

Silver Cord Cascade in the afternoon.

DeLacy Creek to Shoshone Lake.

Depends on how long and up and down you want to go!!

Assume you've included Bunsen Peak, Mt Washburn, Fairy Falls, Point Sublime, Riddle Lake, Osprey Falls, Storm Point and Elephant Back Mountain as done and busy?

Bechler Falls area is nice and should be dry enough to go as far as you want. Cave Falls is short, but the ambitious could (I have not), do Union Falls. Too wet when I was there in June to go too far.

DaveO, Thank you. I've done a couple of your suggestions, but you have offered some new ones! Thanks! Will look them up.

Do some updates once in a while! Always looking, but limited to 6 or 7 mile round trips. Probably be our last trip coming up. Went in '64,'73,87,2012,and 2014. The same hills are getting steeper and our legs are getting shorter or something. Really want to spend more time on the Yell Picnic area trail, really worth it! Did Lake Hebgen and drove the western border up to Bozeman and into Gardiner. Also did Beartooth Highway, the Bechler entrance and Chief Joseph Hiway Enjoy!

As for me Yellowstone in 1992, 1995, 1997, 2005 and 2013. 6-10 mile round trips are perfect. Years ago, my two brothers and I did a 21-mile day hike over Paintbrush Divide in the Tetons. A " killer" as it is about 3,500 ft elevation change up and then down into Cascade Canyon. Met a guy and his wife who admitted to being 74 years old on the trail carrying backpacks!! They have been my inspiration ever since. Don't ever give up.

Now that's hiking! We carry packs and a mono, but my wife's knees are tired so we take our time and despise downgrades!
Nice chat,keep moving onward!
Again, the Picnic area to Amethyst Mt area.

I like Hiking poles they save some falls on steeper downhills. One thing we learned about Yellowstone, be careful on the back trails-we hiked some near the Lamar Valley and saw several moose on the trail. Beautiful sights but most people stay to the main areas-a mile from the road we found few or no people. Suggest hiking with another and not alone, had a park employee who hiked a small peak area and fell and wasn't found till the next summer. It's high rocky country and not many people are very far from the roads! Still have a great time and take lots of shots!

My two brothers and I always hike together. This year my son is joining us. Our respect is found in "the wilderness is unforgiving". The wilderness doesn't care who you are, your experience level, or how much money you earn. We always stay together, respect wildlife, and never leave a footprint.
