Hello, I just bought a Nikon D5100. Can anyone recommend a good book or two, to help me learn how to get the most out of it. Thank you,
Ken

Nikon d5100 for Dummies by Julie Adair King.
Bestselling Author of digital photography
Don't let for dummies scare you a way .It's a great
book
Nikon d5100, From Snapshots to Great Shots
Rob Syvan is also a good book

David Busch's NikonD5100 Guide to Digital SLR Photography is a good and thorough book.

See if Magic Lantern Guides offers a MultiMedia Worksop for the D5100 .... if they do it includes an instructional DVD for the camera ..... you can play the DVD and at the same time, follow useing your camera ..... you can pause or reverse the DVD as necessary .... there is also the Digital Field guide for the camera published by John Wiley

I agree. I checked out several books at the store and ended up with Adair's d3100 for Dummies for my d3100 and it's a great book. Really tells you how to use the features rather than just what they are.

I'd suggest reading the manual that came with the camera, go out and shoot up a memory card while taking notes, then review your pix, and re-read the manual, chapter by chapter again. You haven't told us exactly what type of images you're wanting to capture? Have you just gotten a D5100 because you could/wanted one, or have you been taking pix for awhile now, and wanted to capture better/different images?? Too many variables of your photog knowledge for myself to give an honest reply, and I'm sure I'm not the only one with that thought. You're off to a good start though. You came to the right site  8-)

Personally .....I think reading a Nikon manual, cover to cover, is the worst thing you can do ..... I use other sourse material(writtern by someone who has English as their primary language)and use the Nikon manual for specfic questions .....

Thank you, I had set a bunch of bird feeders last year (very successfully) and had origanally wanted to photograph the birds. After researching cameras, I had selected the D7000, having no prior experience, my local shop recommmended the 5100. I actually used the camera today to shoot video of my daughters soccer game. The cameras capabilities seem amazing. I am really trying to learn all aspects, albiet at an introductory level.

Your local camera store did give you right advice. Remember when you were a kid? You had to learn to crawl before you could walk. It's the same in any endeavor anyone tries. I suggest getting an extra battery for the camera, and an extra memory card or two. A really good book for learning different ways to take bird pix ( After, or while learning your cameras capabilities) is "The Art of Bird Photography" by Arthur Morris. I feel it's an excellent book, very informative, and well worth the time to study....that is, after you read your manual (No matter what some people may think!) Get out, take pix, and have fun    8-)
