I've contacted Admin and suggested he consider a new forum on home printing. I see enough traffic on the subject, including types of printers, ink, paper, technique, etc, posted to both the Main Photography Discussion and Post-Processing Digital Images to think it might be appropriate to expand this into its own separate topic.
Admin isn't sure there would be enough interest to sustain a separate section and I understand his concern. He suggested I touch base with the general membership to get a sense of the level of interest.
So, fellow Hogs, what say you? Is there interest and if so, any thoughts on specific topics it should cover?
Thanks.
I would be interested. A couple of topics might be
1. Printer calibrations;
2. Wireless v. Cable connection

I print primarily at home and am still pretty new at it. I would benefit from a place to share. When you're preparing something to sell or display and something goes wrong it turns into a catastrophe if you can't find some help.
How to match the print to the appearance of the image on the monitor would prove a useful subject, although it has more to do with monitor calibration than with, say, a printer setting.

While I'm not totally against the idea, I really question that there would be enough in the way of unique (and original) subject threads to make a full blown forum section worthwhile.

The subject appears to receive adequate coverage in the Main Photography Discussion and Post-Processing Digital Images forums - I see no point in adding another. As to a specific topic, I would suggest "Home Printing."
I think a whole section devoted to this would be over-kill, but maybe a FAQ section could help send those who need help in the right direction???
I'm a home, and commercial printer. I'm in.

I don't think it is warranted.
And here is why:
Too often I have seen where folks want this, or that, or some other facet added and before long there are so many different facets it is burdensome and tiresome to get around.
But thank goodness, there is the option to only have the area's or forums one is interested in to be displayed on your "home" screen.
I, for one, would find no use in a forum about only printers or printing only.
Because I have that choice.
I base my opinion on past experiance with such burgeoning forums that were like somebodies mixed up filing cabinet and nearly as hard to maneuver in.
But hey, knock your self out. I wouldn't have a use for it.

Thanks for your input. Do you do any printing at home?

Very little anymore.
Everybody has cell phones with cameras and they throw around Paperless pictures.
On occasion the DIL will send a video as well.
But she put together Grandkid calenders for us and her folks for Christmas. Bought online.
My wife does have 4 containers full of old pictures. And every once in a while she wants one of more moved.
That can usually buy me a day or two of severe back pain.
On very rare occasions I will print an 8X10 for someone.
I have two printers I can use. One is a photo printer.
Also, thumb drives are awful cheap. Load a whole shmire on one and they've got them all. ;)
(And I've got ink for when I need to do something...)
What if the proposed section were broadened to cover mounting, matting and framing as well? I see a number of questions arising about these too, and I have some questions of my own as I learn to prepare my own prints for display and sales. Would that draw more potential interest?
There is a bit of bias, I've noticed, in that some of us don't want specialized sections on UHH. Other forums I participate in have lots of special sections so this caught me by surprise here. I may be in the minority, but having sections helps me find things, and prevents interesting threads and posts from being so quickly washed away in the conglomeration of stuff that accrues on the Main and Gallery sections. I was initially so put off by this that I quit participating in UHH for a long while. Then I discovered the subforums and that's most of what I do here.

I'm all for it. One of the mentors for our photo club--35 years in NYC fashion photography for REALLY big name magazines, now a gallery owner--says printing is the only way to get the most out of your images. He calls displaying them digitally "lazy." I'm not sure I totally agree cuz there's a place for most everything. But to me. there is something immensely satisfying in creating an image and going through the post-processing to get exactly what you want, then printing, mounting, matting and framing the final product and giving it to someone as a gift.
