I am currently using Canon DSLR's, T5 and an old 300D, and often shoot with an add on or external flash attachments. A Promaster 7200EDF. When I purchased this flash unit I was informed that if I used my old and much liked Vivitar 283 flash I could ruin or short out the electronics in my cameras. Is this true or was the supplier just trying to sell me a new flash? Please advise.

I will use as a slave unit with a optical trigger that is totally separate device from the camera.

Use isolation: SYK amd Seagull, You will find them on Ebay/Amazon for Less than $20. This is a family some even have optical slave function that ignores the camera preflash before flashing. Work well, Low cost.

With preflash $20 free shipping:

You can find this device, Wein Safe syncs, at B&H, nd I am sure elswhere. With this you can use the Vivtar on the camera hot shoe, with no risk of frying anything

buying the safe sync negate the saving of using an old flash like the 283.
