Its a game. Optional! There are always other games. I gave up football and have moved to photography. I gave up working and now play at retirement. I gave up sex, it was expensive and just a biochemical addition. I was wrong replacing that with photography is more expensive.

I've moved from Photoshop to Lightroom and Elements. I'm happy. Now, how do you do channel mixing in Elements?

Do I sense an Adobe "New Coke Formula" fiasco in the works that is going to hurt them badly and open the door for competitors to knock them off as King of the Hill?

Anyone remember Lotus 1-2-3? That was THE computer program at one time. Yes, the mighty can fall. Just ask the WordPerfect company, at one time the #1 wordprocessor. I still think it's the best, but it has dropped out of popularity. Even PS can lose its position.

I heard you will either be able to do a one time purchase of the program or do a monthly subscription and get all the upgrades as they become available. So you will always have the latest version of CS.

With the one time purchase, you won't get the upgrades.

As per the price of the program, CS5 is priced at over $600 so if they charge $50 a month for their subscription, it will be just like a payment plan anyhow, it might open the door for more people to purchase it.

Current users of Photoshop have been able to upgrade to the newer version. Cost for the upgrade can be as little as $139. That would be considerably less than the "cloud" program. I started with Photoshop 5 and now use CS5. I skipped every other upgrade. Adobe now is only going to allow upgrades from the previous version. So if you want CS6 you will have to have CS5. No more skipping versions! Adobe Cloud may be right for some users but I can't see it as plus for most of us photographers. This is classic greed on the part of Adobe and it will backfire on them at some point.

Maybe dealing only with professionals is what it's all about to begin with. It will likely bite them in the butt, as it should.

Or, heaven forbid, when you want to work where there isn't an Internet connection...like me every week in my camper.

One would hope they are smarter than that but I never cease to be amazed by the stupidity of large organizations. Netflix tried to put themselves out of business last year and lost hundreds of millions of dollars.

My theory is that the IQ of organizations is the IQ of the smartest person in the organization divided by the number of people in the organization.

That works out to a pretty low number for companies with more than two people...

So what do we do when our Internet connection goes down, or slows to a crawl? I think it is OK for thoses that want to use it for a month or two, but not forever. A horrible idea.

MarcoMarks made his point well, I have a few comments to add from my heart and soul:

Pros and wannabees will always say "I use Photoshop,NO, not element, PHOTOSHOP!!" However for most of our needs, PSP or
Gimp are quite sufficient. In fact, I am not sure what "PS" will do that PSP X4 will not? (open to education, please)

Guys & Dolls, realize that $$ is the key. I recall years ago you bought Norton's and it had full range of Virus, OS repair, Register Cleaner etc... You owned it... then ooops once a year began and you could buy levels of protection. They charged A-Lot... then came competition and the price dropped. My Norton's name still invokes a bitter taste response in my Cloud Soul!

RE: Word-Perfect, indeed it was, but Word bought their way in to the world. I used Corel Quatro for Env. Reposts because it would do things Excel could not (specifically semi-log vs semi-log graphing as I recall) Indeed that may have been remedied. (humm Corel is from Canada)

So I like a lot of others use I use PSP X-4 along with GIMP for Math-Map and some other exotic plug-ins by the users group. Yes, let us not forget my MGI Suite 4 (beyond was 5, 6, etc IMO was messed up by Roxio improvements)

I still use MGI Suite 4 for simplistic things and for some things that get too complicated in "better" programs. Clone and Printing are very good examples. Printing because I tell it forget the aspect ratio,, forget standard sizes,,, do this.. if it had a voice it would say "yes master" where as "better programs" that know what you should want (also this is my major complaint against MS Word (( along with that ribbon menu with no backward option,, I own 2010, but use my old 2003 ((((along with WP X-4))))

So? How much better dose your PP software have to be and how many MPix do you really need for your exhibiting of photos on HDTV or normal size home prints? Use what software and camera equipment you have to the max and master it well, when some magic happens, such as a self-contained 25xglass attached to a mirrorless full sensor then consider change.

Till then add Topaz Labs magic plug-ins to your PP and personal creativity to the max. Have fun, help each other, enjoy and be positive.

My suggestion is that each and every one of the members who have responded to this "cloud" issue send their objections, exactly as stated here, to Adobe and if they receive enough complaints they will change their new business model.

Another thing that can be done is just keep the software that you have now and turn off any menu selection that allows updating from the internet. If enough people were to do that they would quickly change they policies.

Another five years, ten max, and everything will be in the clouds. Eventually all of these software subscriptions will force me to drop my health insurance.... Wait! I don't have health insurance. It got too expensive! lol

OK everyone, I have actually called Adobe and asked.... you will still be able to purchase CS for $600+ and not have to pay a monthly subscription. The subscription option is available as well, you can pay $75 a month (or a discounted rate of $50 a month if you pay for a full year in advance). You will be able to stop and start your subscription as needed. Besides getting the latest updates, and putting PS on a payment plan there really isn't any benefit I can see.

I believe purchasing it at a one time cost and forgoing the upgrades is still the way to go.

i would imagine the developers of Gimp would see a lot of donations coming in, along with a lot of suggestions for improvements. And other software developers would see an umbrella which would shelter them from price competition, and induce them to fill the gap. I have used Photoshop CS2 for years, and only upgraded to CS5 on my laptop a month ago when Adobe offered an upgrade for $199. No way was I going to pay for a full new license because CS2 no longer qualified for upgrade pricing! It's a question of value: Am I going to save that much time that it's worth the upgrade? If the answer is no, then I've always been content to stick with older versions. Is there some new feature that will let me do what I can't do now, and it's important to me? Most of the new features in Photoshop have been of marginal interest and value to me. I haven't fooled around with HDR yet in CS5, that conceivably might be useful. CS2's HDR is admittedly pretty lame. But I'm not averse to replicating the effect with layers and adjustment masks and controlling the process myself, not that I have more than a handful of images where I'd want to spend my time that way.

And I do value my time, and that, more than anything else, determines when I'm willing to spring for software.
